Johnson Central 2015

Featured Replies

I highly doubt Williamsburg will play it, but it would be good for both teams.

I fully expect Johnson Central to be one of the premier teams in AAAA next year.

I know JC got raked over the coals for their lack of quality opponents in non-district schedule but the bottom line is the schedule had nothing to do with them losing a very competitive game to a good Cov. Catholic team. The blocked FG for a TD was the deciding factor. Not opponents.

This years JC team will be in the same boat. It is important for JC to beat Ashland and secure the 1 seed in the district, and that is no small task with a back that can make any ordinary play into an extraordinary play.

Should be a fun and exciting season for the Golden Eagles. I wish them luck.

Looks like Clarksville High in Indiana (just across the river from Louisville) is looking for a Week 0 game.

One of the main reasons JC has such a hard time is football in EKY is not as strong as in the past. 15-20 years ago games like Ashland, Boyd Co, and Greenup Co were quality games.

EKY football is quickly becoming a case of the haves and the have nots. Some teams have talent the others do not.

And those are district games, which makes it even tougher to find quality regular season games within the mountains.

In 1999, the following Eastern Kentucky schools played in the two largest classes in Kentucky:

AAA (13) - Ashland, Bell County, Cawood, East Carter, Greenup County, Knott County Central, Knox Central, Lawrence County, Magoffin County, Rockcastle County, Rowan County, Sheldon Clark, Whitley County.

AAAA (6) - Boyd County, Clay County, Johnson Central, North Laurel, Perry County Central, South Laurel.

In 2015, the following Eastern Kentucky schools play in the three largest classes in Kentucky:

4A (9) - Ashland, Boyd County, Clay County, East Carter, Greenup County, Johnson Central, Knox Central, Rockcastle County, Rowan County.

5A (6) - Harlan County, Letcher County Central, North Laurel, Perry County Central, South Laurel, Whitley County.

So there are four fewer "big" schools in Eastern Kentucky now than there were 16 years ago, none play in the biggest class, and three are significantly smaller (class wise) than they previously were. When you are looking at the demise of much of eastern Kentucky football, look no further than these numbers. People have left the mountains and there hasn't be a resupply.

Schedule has been finalized.

Wk 1- @ Fairland (OH)

Wk 2- @ Lexington Catholic

Wk 3- Oscar Smith (VA)

Wk 4- Harlan County

Wk 5- Boyd Co.

Wk 6- East Carter

Wk 7- @ Greenup Co.

Wk 8- Rowan Co.

Wk 9- @ Ashland

Wk 10- @ Belfry

Wk 3 was finalized today but am not sure if it is going to be played on Sept 11 or 12th though.

For the detractors of the JC schedule this is a big time gut punch.

Oscar Smith is the real deal!

Traditionally one of the strongest schools in Virginia's largest classification and a veritable breeding ground of D-1 players.

I know CovCath and Highlands fans have taken some pot shots at JC for their scheduling in the past...kind of ironic that between Oscar Smith, Belfry, and LexCath that in 2015 Johnson Central may have the hardest 3 game slate of the entire lot.

Oscar Smith is a big time program in Virginia. If JC is trying to silence the criticism about their scheduling, they're doing a good job.

If Im not mistaken Oscar Smith, VA has a QB that is being looked at very hard by Virginia Tech amongst other D1 programs. They also have a couple other D1 signee's as well. Great pick up for Coach Matney.

Probably bit off way more than they can chew against this 6A power but it is at least a full 10 game slate. Last year they had a kid go to Florida State and return a QB that has verbally committed to Virginia Tech at QB. Not sure if JC will see another 4A team with the caliber of players that Oscar Smith will bring to Paintsville. I just hope that the Eagles can keep it respectable and OSHS leaves their kennel at home.

2014 Season in Review

...Bout time.

All jokes aside I'm glad they found someone who isn't scared to play them, as Mattney claims. Oscar Smith will probably reset JC's clock back to daylight savings time. But I've gotta give them credit for scheduling such a team. It will certainly help them in the playoffs.

I would love to see them give Gunnar Sloan the ball more. Kid was a monster of a ballplayer 3 yrs ago in Fbu Kentucky.

Said the expert on all things concerning Johnson Central football.

Interesting that they are making such a long trip to JC.

Is there a return trip for Oscar Smith?
