College student Shanice Clark, who attended California University of Pennsylvania, was found dead in her apartment in the early hours of the morning.

Police have now revealed they believe the 21-year-old died accidentally after choking on the gum while she slept.

The 6-foot forward, who was from Toronto in Canada, was a star with the university's Vulcans basketball team, the New York Daily News reported.

Beautiful girl; such a sad accident.

Prayers to her family and friends.

Oh man. That's terrible, and probably something dozens on this board have done before, dozing off with gum in mouth.

Not gum, but a Skoal Bandit on occasion.

Sad story.

Sad story.

Or both.

Very sad!

Do you not wake up when you can no longer breathe?

Do you not wake up when you can no longer breathe?

Long enough to realize you are suffocating likely.

How much gum would it take to suffocate? One piece of chewing gum wouldn't seem dangerous to me.

Can we get the poll opened back up for voting? I didn't get a chance to vote. Did it allow for multiple choices?

There wasn't an all of the above option.

Too young to go.

UPDATE TO STORY:

A Pennsylvania college basketball star who was found dead in her dorm in January died from a blood cell disorder — not from choking on gum, as was initially believed, the Washington County coroner said Monday.

Shanice Clark, a senior at California University of Pennsylvania, died from sickle cell trait, a blood cell disorder that usually does not show symptoms and in very rare cases can lead to sudden death, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Clark, 21, was found in her dorm around 3 a.m. on Jan. 18 and pronounced dead an hour later. Police initially said she had died by inhaling gum in her sleep, although they noted that blood tests and an autopsy were pending.

The 6-foot forward for the school’s Vulcans team hailed from Toronto, Canada and was studying communications.

Coincidentally, Clark’s team released a video tribute to her on Monday. The Vulcans are one of three finalists for Russell Athletic's “Together We R” award for women’s basketball teams that overcame unexpected adversity during their season.
