I can appreciate the hard work that is put in to compile and choose this list. For me personally, it just cheapens the nomination and selection if 3 left off the BGP team were nominated for the top football award in the state. Doesn't make sense.

Making the OFFENSE or DEFENSE team on the All BGP Team is a tough task. When you have players like Hoge, Veneman, Reece Ryan, Quinton Baker, Marquez Trigg, etc. who do not make the team, that gives you an idea of how competitive those spots are. Many very good players do not make the team and it isn't a disgrace or a slight.

 

The ATHLETE category is not a 2nd team, or the best of the rest type of award. It is a completely different animal. Read the criteria posted in post #1 of this thread. BGP tries to recognize 12 of those kids who have shown "exceptional abilities in multiple facets of the game that embody the spirit of high school football". When the first couple of All BGP teams came out many years ago, that category was actually called IRONMAN. It is a unique team and it is designed to acknowledge those kids who are a bit of a throwback in that they contribute in many ways at a high level, some of them rarely leaving the field. Not everybody is going to qualify for consideration here.

 

Inclusion on the ATH team does not imply that those kids are better, higher ranked or more valuable than some of the players who didn't make the OFFENSE or DEFENSE teams. They are just different type of players and are being recognized as such.

It will be hard to convince a lot of people the 3 Mr. Football candidates weren't better than some of the ATH on the list, regardless of throwback skills or not.

Depends if he was one of the best I would guess. Was he HHS only punter?

Hoge was not the main punter but is an excellent punter. He was not the holder, but has held in years past and did a great job. He could have received kick offs or punts and been phenominal with his elusiveness. He could have started at LB, CB, or safety and would have been an outstanding defensive player. None of this was necessary in the two platoon system.

 

He just doesn't meet the criteria, oh well.

The BGP team officially doesn't care if you get injured. Miller from Scott County played exactly 3 plays this season, all on offense so he never took the field as a DB, the position he made the team at. I'm not mad about it just a statement. Kyle Bolin was the QB on this team a couple years ago after playing only 6 and 1/2 half games due to injury and Damien Harris is in the same boat.

 

Besides that HUGE shout out to Chase Boling on his selection, he had a great year and I'm glad to see him get recognition now from 2 of the award teams (the CJ team being the other). You made the Lexington Catholic community proud this season!

Don't take what I said I thought the criteria for ATH was. I have no idea, that was only my opinion what I thought it was.

 

Guru or Ram would be the ones to ask about the criteria for ATH. I think you are correct in that we really do need it defined to understand it.

 

 

 

Hopefully someone on the BGP committee can step forward and give the criteria for ATH.

Don't know if you're being sarcastic but I'm not lying about Miller. Broke his ankle 3 plays into SC's season opener against Lafayette while playing WR. Never took a snap on defense this season.
