I am back! Wow! Kentucky is one of the most active states in AAU Ball in the month of May as several levels put their talents on display in 4 differ states including KY, OH, IN, and TN. I was in Florence for a short time and got a glimpse of the DS Allstars featuring their 17's with Thomas Coleman.

 

I wondered if any of the BGP'ers would be at Florence this weekend. I saw DS All-Stars 17/U play twice. If I had known you were there (and knew who you were), I would liked to have met you, Stripes.

Josh Elbert has decided to spend more time focusing on football. He is a fantastic athlete.

 

Ryan Luster is still with the program. He is probably going to play with one of our Ohio teams. He is going to be a very good player.

I heard today from a player on the team that Luster is no longer with the Kentucky team, and I can't imagine that he has improved enough in the past 3 months to play for the Cincinatti team.

I think he is Boone's JV coach. I know nothing beyond that.

DS west for sure, Beaumont and Twany out front with Johonne on the wing. You also have Coleman in the middle and no one the west could stop Pettigrew. He is a man on the boards and has an outside touch. Novsel is strong in the middle but not on that level yet. East has a 7ft soph but slow footwork. Portwood and Smart do not rebound very aggresively. I like Vanhoose with the ball and Haddix is strong but his handles are shaky. Too much team speed and the west has been playing together for a while now. I have seen both teams and that is my observation. I know that the west did well in Atlanta last yr and held their own in Vegas against stellar competition.

I think West is a little stronger on the inside, but it will come down to how hot the East team is that day, they have the ability to get "red hot" and when that happens, doesnt much matter who they are playing, but the East team has more options on the perimeter, Novosel is a better scorer on the inside than Coleman, Coleman is stronger on the defensive side, Haddix/Van Hoose vs Beckham/Pettigrew, Newton vs Beaumont, will be a very good game to watch, Portwood and Smart are the x factors for the East, Johan can cause major problems on defense for the west, Newton has the same ability on the east, Has Kentucky Shining Stars played the west yet? Would be interesting to get their pick

Good observations on the East - West matchup. Keeping Coleman and Pettigrew off the glass is the issue the East would need to resolve, especially on the offensive end. East would play a ball controlled offense and would set the tone for the game. I know the DS Allstars play man-to-man D, but if the East wanted to make a game of it, I would pack it in against the West (maybe a 3-2) and force players such and Hamilton and Beckham to shoot from the outside where their range is limited. Concentrate on Beaumont who has increase his range and overall shot. The East would also need to keep Johanne from penetrating the lane, not an easy task.

 

Its true that the East would struggle to score from the block, but Novosell is an excellent interior passer who can locate shooters such as Van Hoose on the perimeter and create open looks for Haddix who loves to slash. Portwood is the "x" factor as stated.

You make a good point, as you have prob observed with summer ball it is very hard to slow a game down. There are very little fouls called and the pace is normally up and down the court. I know last yr the west added Justin Benadetti, a 6'5" shooter from Providence in Indiana. I am not sure what he is doing to do this yr, probably join up in July like last yr and go to Vegas and California. He has a nice stroke from outside and can knock it down.

The DS 16's have a nice squad. Winning the tourny up in Florence last weekend and making the semi's in the King of the South in Nashville. They tied for 1st place in their pool with 2 other teams and when 2 of their big guys had to go back to L'ville for awards ceremony they lost in a nail biter to a team from Augusta, Ga. The team they had down by 16 in pool play (Smyrna Stars) won the whole thing. Several college coaches approached the coaching staff raving about players, attitudes and chemistry. Most of them together since 6th grade.
