Has South Laurel played in any tournaments yet?If so when and where?How did they do?

Kentucky Shining Star Sports played the Kentucky Heat (South Laurel) twice this past weekend. Kentucky Shining Star Sports won the first game 61-41. Brandon Callahan of East Central High School had 18 pts and 10 rebounds to lead the way.

 

Profit and Hammond are fantastic players. Hammond had 20 pts in the first game.

 

I don't have the final score or stats for the second game, but the spread was about 20 pts.

It was not a very big tourney, I am assuming since it was easter.

I have coached in Ohio the last four years and the state was set up so that the division one qualifier was on one weekend and the next weekend was the division two qualifier. This gave you the opportunity to qualify division two if you failed to qualify division one.

 

I am having a very hard time figuring out the Kentucky system.

 

I was told that our division one qualifier was the weekend of May 19th. I was also told that the division two was part of this tourney.

 

Why are they the same weekend?

 

Can someone help me with this?

In kentucky, to qualify for division 2, all you have to do is play and not win, then your in, what a deal!

yes, you are right as usual, kentucky gets about 40 or more teams up to about 8th grade, and then anything over 6-8 would be a big turnout, actually, aau is just for fun, there are no college coaches there, so you are playing for practice or fun, or bragging rights. Competition is just from Kentucky which means it is not as good as your local bci tournament in Florence, but for all those people that want classes so more people can say they won a state title, its as easy as it gets:D

All I really know is about the 16th region players and a couple of the other kids on thier team. I havent really said much about the Junior-to-team (Crawford, Hundley, Stewart) but I do know they have been very competetive despite losing most of thier games. I konw the senior teams done well this weekend. Matt Walls had a great tournament and really bosted his stock. Im sure he will get some call from the coaches that seen him this weekend. But like I said earlier, Im really only keeping up with the 16th region kids and how thier teams are doing.

But your right. I do not agree with classes in High School basketball and certainly not in AAU. Its just another way to make money and make it easier for more teams to just compete. What happens is, when you have a certain team(s) dominate at a level, some teams just do not bother to appear for AAU state, so they went to classes. Thus D1 and D2.

Last year there was 8-15U teams, 8 16U teams and 12 17U teams at All-Star Weekend.

I can certainly say that if it were not for the D1 and D2 you would see AAU decline more than it did three years ago. The numbers are way up this year and we were told that it would take three years before most teams would see that there is now a place to play for every team. Example. You had a team from Fulton Co (far western Ky) You paid your team membership around $150.Team entry $225, hotel for two nights $400 gas and entry to the tournament. You have spent over $1000 before you even walked on the floor.

You come to Lexington and have to play a Derek Smith team who blasts you by 40 points. It serves a purpose this was a school team and DS was a all-star team that was loaded. I am pretty sure I would not be back. This is a bad experience for your first time. Something had to be done.

I would agree with you on the part that we must face it Kentucky does not have the high impact players and teams. Our state does not produce the talent as much as others. Having the major metro areas help.

The competition at the last two Super Regionals have been outstanding. With teams from Georgia ,Virginia Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Texas and Tennessee. As far as competition I would say there is plenty that come to AAU tournaments.

I would like to know why you are so down on teams trying to compete on seperate levels. I think it was the best thing AAU has done over the past ten years and should of been done alot earlier. I would say that Ky is a D2 state with only about 20% of the teams playing in D1. This is what 95% of our coaches want and I am here to tell you they love having the split divisions.

I tried to put one of the tournaments together because of only four teams in D1. We had to go back and redo the schedule because 8 of the teams were not going to play. Numbers talk and AAU gives their coaches a lot of rule making decisions.

I can't complain about that, but it seems like there would be money lost by not playing both a division one and division two tournament.

 

So, the way that I understand it, all I have to do is play division one and if I don't qualify I get a division two bid.

 

What a deal!

The one thing I do notice about D1 and D2 divisions is now that some teams who should be playing D1 are taking the low-road and playing D2 just to win or dominate that division. In any aspect, the various levels does allow for higher revenues and for teams to at least not fear for the 40 point blow-outs and compete at the lower level.

you play in one state tournament, if you dont qualify for the nationals by winning, you automatically qualify for the d-2 nationals just by participating in the state tournament and not winning, but I think you already knew that
