I realize that Thornton moved and he was a big part of this group, but the junior class had a lot of potential in middle school. The kids that are no longer playing lost interest at various stages beginning in the 7th grade.

Something has to change at Ashland. In 8 or so years Biggs has nothing but runner-up finishes at best, granted he has been close to a couple region titles. But it is evident to anyone with two eyes that he has run the program into the ground. Starting in 7th grade kids give up on basketball because they know what type of coach is waiting for them at Blazer. Over the years there have been many good athletes who have played one year, part of a year, or not played at all simply because of Biggs. Sam Hunter - 1 year, Quinton Baker - played beginning parts of 2 seasons and quit, Malik Massey - never played because of Biggs dumb rule about hair length, Cade O'Bryan - played 9th grade but no more. Cody Bowling - quit mid way through senior year. Tyler Rose - played 9th & 10th then quit. Dikembe Dixson & Cousin - left. Daniel McDavid - 9th grade then quit. Blake Mcloud - 9th grade then quit. John Baldock - did not play senior year. Also, look at the turnover on the coaching staff - Whitlock - gone, Mike Polley - gone, Mo Mullins - Gone.

 

I bet the Kittens could beat the Tomcats this year. Its sad...and not necessary.

I think the Day twins were really good middle school players at Verity but never played in high school, played soccer I think.

I agree. I've known Sammy since he was in diapers, he was a great athlete, no matter what the sport. I won't speak for him, but imo, he could see the writing on the wall as far as the direction the basketball was headed. Thus he decided to focus strictly on football and baseball.

 

Where there is smoke there is fire. That's a long list of kids that have decided not to play for Buddy. Some say kids just don't want to work hard these days, I don't buy that for a second. If that was the case everyone would be struggling, not just Ashland. I liken Buddy Biggs to Ashlands version of Tubby Smith. He inherited a program that was in good shape and has progressively ran it into the ground. If I were Mark Swift I would already be on the phone looking for a replacement.

You can't blame the Dixsons situation on Biggs. Maybe you can lay it at his feet to some degree that they ended up there in the first place, but he didn't exactly run them off.

I agree you can't blame him for transfers. But that still leaves a long list of athletes that elected not to play for him. Some good coaches have left his staff also. There is definitely an issue there.

Rules about hair length and facial hair are irrelevant.

 

If a kid will not play because those rules, then they truly do not want to play. It is an excuse, and there are tons of them.

What if no other sport in said school has such a rule?

 

Massey was allowed to play football. IMO, his braids, dreads, whatever you want to call them would be much more problematic as a football player than a basketball player.
