I re watched the play while editing the film...didn't look to be much jawing like I originally said. Harris was trapped at mis court and Bolden reached around from behind to try and draw a jumpball. Foul gets called on him and he has ahold of the ball. Neither player lets go and Harris kind of nudges Bolden with his elbow to get him to let go of the ball so the ref calls a double T...neither coach was happy about it. In that situation, you simply tell the two captains to chill and move on. Neither player deserved a T for that...very weak, just like the dunk T on Bolden

Call me a jerk, but if a kid dunks, I hate seeing him T'd up for hanging on the rim or celebrating (unless the celebration is getting in someone from the other team's face). Smack the backboard, spin around on the rim, do a chin up, pull yourself up and put your elbow down the rim, whatever you want to do. At a certain point it just comes down to the fact that you are wasting energy and not getting back on defense.

 

It seems like rules like the "hanging on the rim" T and the celebration penalties after TD's in the NFL were made by people who probably never dunked or scored touchdowns themselves.

 

I think the "hanging on the rim" T's are highly subjective and that they're usually very hit or miss on what's called.

Double techs are called after Harris turns around and says something to Bolden, I assume because Bolden responds but there wasn't nearly enough jawing to warrant a double tech.

 

 

Nothing in that video appears to be T-worthy. Unfortunate. However, bad judgement on James' part reaching completely around the player. You're never going to get the jump ball call like that...never!

 

In his defense, I also find him in my limited knowledge to be a very respectful, God-fearing young man. I hope this passes quickly for him, and he completes a very successful senior season.

I'd like to see more of the aftermath of the wrap around tie up, and see what earned the T there, but, my goodness, to look at those two infractions and think that they cost him a 2 or 3 game suspension is pretty unbelievable. Seems like an incredibly severe penalty for these transgressions...

 

And, in my experience, my contact with him has been small, but James has always been soft spoken, respectful and well mannered in every conversation I have ever had with him.

Not in real time... and when you are the guy on the rim and see someone running in like that out of the corner of your eye you don't have the luxury of knowing if they're going to undercut you. Most refs I see doing games can barely run up and down the floor, let alone jump up and touch the net. Funny to me that they get to make these kinds of judgement calls.
