Merril Hoge says whoever drafted Johnny Manziel should be fired

Featured Replies

ESPN’s Merril Hoge has called for whoever drafted quarterback Johnny Manziel to be fired. After the Browns traded up from No. 26 to No. 22 to get Manziel, owner Jimmy Haslam told ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio that Haslam became convinced Cleveland fans wanted the man known as Johnny Football when a homeless man told Haslam, “Draft Manziel.”

“[W]hoever drafted him in Cleveland, they need to be fired,” Hoge said on ESPN, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “Because it’s unfair to the kid. He has sixth-round talent but first-round hype, and you draft him there and now regardless of what happens from here on out, he will be expected to play like a first-rounder and that’s unfair to him.

“He doesn’t have the skill set to withstand that expectation and that’s not his fault, it’s the Cleveland Browns’ for drafting him that high.”

Hoge doesn’t see things ending well for Manziel and the Browns.

“This will be the saddest, quickest ending we have seen in quite some time,” Hoge said in September, via Cabot. “It’ll be like a Tim Tebow.” (Which really wasn’t “quite some time” ago.)

I agree with Hoge.

I was happy on draft day and I am even happier today. Manziel's debut against the Bengals was just like I imagined it would be way back when.

Does anyone think this game was a blip on the radar and Manziel will develop into a starting NFL QB?

His game is gonna take a while - if it EVER does - to get to the pro level.

He's not a pro QB and he never was. And yes, they should be fired. This is something common folk saw coming from a mile away.

I looked back for my post at the draft:

Oh Cleveland. You are just going to regret this so much.

And I remain convinced.

I agree with Hoge.

Slim chance. The announcers were pounding the Wilson comparison, and while they share some physical similarities, Wilson has a far better mind for the game. I don't think Manziel has shown any capacity to improve himself in the areas of the game he needs to, either.

Manziel's cockiness will ruin his NFL career. He was an arrogant punk in college and I don't see it changing in the NFL. It is open season for teams to mock him and I am glad the Bengals stuck it to him. Pretty soon those money sign gestures will be hand to mouth gesturing imitating "I am hungry"!

I have no idea why he has been so hyped up coming into the season and the draft. His college completion percentage was pretty weak. His style of QBing doesn't work in the NFL. If you want to be a successful QB look at all the Hall a Famers and current successful ones. A running style QB doesn't survive very long in the NFL.

He was raised wealthy in an oil family. I don't think going hungry will ever be a concern for anyone in that family.

The Browns made a huge mistake playing him. There will be enough teams that need a QB that would have donated high draft picks for him prior to the draft. Now, there may be some, but his flaws are now on tape and they shot that wad. Dumb move to play him.

Wilson is a game manager surrounded by an abundance of talent, Manziel is surrounded by rookies and unproven players.

Russell Wilson is the only successful NFL QB that depends primarily on athleticism to make plays. The only reason Wilson is successful, and Griffin, Manziel, Newton etc are not, is that the Seahawks are ELITE in every other facet of the game. Yeah, Seattle wins, but they don't exactly light up the scoreboard either.

Andrew Luck is the only QB in recent memory who was a high draft pick and successful almost immediately. He came out of a pro style offense. The skills acquired by a QB running a spread offense just do not translate into the NFL.

Aaron Rodgers caddied for Bret Farve for how many years? Tom Brady caddied for Bledsoe for how long? Both had long apprenticeships High draft pick QBs just don't get that chance and the trail of consistent failure is long, and the repetition of this behavior by NFL GM's stunning .

Four or Five years from now, I wonder if another young QB will be so brutally appraised as Manziel has. What goes around comes around.

It is easy to say a qb is a bust and was drafted too high because the success rate of any Qb taken in the draft is very low. I also think the success of a qb is first off dependent on (in order) offensive coordinator, offensive line, defense, wr/TE, and rb.

I also think that Manziel is surrounded by rookies and unproven players that make it even worse. I do not think they should have started him.

I agree. Add Manning to coming right of college and being successful.

If I'm building (or rebuilding) an NFL team, I start by spending high draft picks on OL. 2nd I build the DL, run stoppers and edge pass rushers. It seems so obvious to me to build from the LOS out.

I don't disagree with the concept, but sooner or later you need a quarterback.
