On the Ohio side, X is obviously a very tough game. DeSales and Sycamore are both winnable games for a program like CovCath, but neither is a pushover. Sycamore is a bit more cyclical than the other two, and they aren't in a ebb tide right now.

 

Dixie loses a lot, LexCath is perennially overhyped, and Grant is a district game.

 

Beechwood, Ryle, and Highlands will offer great local competition.

 

Scott County is something of an unknown to me. Obviously, they've been very good lately, but I have no idea what they have back.

I'm with you. I don't know how much this schedule (which has not officially been finalized and put on the books) is a result of conflicts and programs declining the offer to compete, but I think it's pretty obviously too much for them. That was the reason I questioned blitzoneveryplay when he said this is a "traditional Cov Cath schedule". If you look to the era when Cov Cath was regularly winning championships (and beating Highlands), they were playing a schedule of nearly 100% Kentucky programs, and the vast majority of the teams on their program were Northern Kentucky schools.

 

Apart from the program's early years in the late 60s and early-to-mid 70s, Cov Cath football didn't tangle much with Ohio schools. It wasn't until '91 that they went back up to the GCL when they brought in the yearly game against Moeller (who they have still only beaten once). They stuck with the Moeller game until the '99 season, when they switched it out for a game against Columbus DeSales, which they lost 7-33. They lost to DeSales again in 2000...19-42. Then in 2001 they went bigger with 3 out of state games: Tennessee's Brentwood Academy, whom they lost to 13-14, a 33-36 loss to DeSales, and a 41-7 victory over Cincy LaSalle in an era for LaSalle where their team was greatly inferior to the big Cincinnati teams like Elder, Colerain, Moeller, and Cincy St. X. 2002 added two more losses...10-14 to Moeller, and 6-34 to DeSales. 2003 they had two more losses...16-21 to Cincy St. X and 21-49 to Elder. 2004 they had two more losses...17-27 to Cincy St. X and 9-10 to Elder. 2005 they had three more losses...6-16 to Moeller, 0-24 to Cincy St. X, and 3-40 to Columbus Bishop Watterson. I could go on but I won't.

 

I think looking at all of these big games in one season, at this point, is too much for Cov Cath. One big out of state/out of district game I can understand. I think that's reasonable. However, even with Grant County in their district, I still think Cov Cath has one of the most difficult districts to compete in in the whole state, regardless of division. Even with Sycamore being a fairly reasonable matchup, they're still taking on DeSales, Cincy St. X and Scott County...and that's being tacked on to Dixie Heights and Highlands.

 

I would like to see this schedule gets pared back. No doubt that if they will be battle tested for the playoffs....but they have to come out of things healthy as well, and looking at the last two seasons, that has been no easy task whatsoever, even without this many meatgrinder games to play in.

Great schedule...nothing wrong with sacrificing the NKY title and willing to take some lumps along the way to better your program and potentially win a State Championship...Highlands and T do it every yr, others follow and some are just looking for wins which mean nothing in the end...:thumb:

Love it. They like the challenge and to be challenge. Unlike other programs who pad their season and stats with cupcake schedule.

Got to thinking about this thread again. This is a pretty serious pile of work for Coach Eviston to undertake in his first year with the Colonels. What are folks thinking about this schedule in light of the coaching change?

I agree. 5-5 and they better hope they can stay healthy or it could be worse depending on the order of the games.
