But I have to ask why this gets your blood pressure up RC when I've shown examples of your Bluebirds walking all over my Dawgs? albeit a different sport. But you have not taken a stronger stance on a Girls high school coach at an all girls school exhibiting the type of behavior that warrants 3 T's ?? What I was saying, if hhs played my 4th grade team, and I was the coach of the girls, I could find ways to play the game so that the girls could still play and still not beat my 4th grade team by 85 in a half. I could do things on the girls side to keep that from happening.

Agreed RC. And mind you I don't have a dog in this fight. However, what is more embarrassing and a waste of time to watch? Superior athletes play keep away from little kids for 32 minutes or to watch players play

 

To start, I didn't read into the first post that they were bragging merely reporting the score. If they were bragging then shame on them. 2nd, many have posted how absurd the score was, but I didn't see any of those comments when Scott beat Calvary 63-7, or when they beat Silver Grove last year 83-18 and certainly not when SK beat Scott last year 83-38 with starters in most of that game. So is it just because its Holmes? If so then shame on those that feel that way. I also saw on here a comparison drawn between football. Sorry, its not different. Getting beaten by a ton whether boy/girl/football/basketball/chess or basket weaving sucks.

 

Now I am not a big fan of running up the score. However, you have to let players play. As a parent I pay my fees and my price of admission to see my kid play and contribute. Not sit the bench. As a coach I am always evaluating my players and helping them develope skills which is best tested at first in easier circumstances and perfected against stiffer competition.

 

Two things that stick out to me. One..... the starters only had 69 of the 105 so the subs had the rest. And to me you shouldn't hold the subs back because this is a great time for them to get improvement through court time as well. Two..... I guarantee the coach didn't set out to score 100pts at the beginning of the game. If he had then apparently the score would have been 100 at the half. More than likely though he may have looked at both teams and been aware that he had more talent but, you can never know trully know how much more until the game is played. That said scoring as fast as they were it was probably out of hand before he even realized it.

 

Now before anyone gets upset at my comments, let it be known I am neither condemning nor condoning anything about this game. These are kids on both sides that become stronger through adversity (even this big) and are entitled to play their best (also even this big).

 

Best of luck to both teams as the season moves on.

Obvious to me is this game should never had been scheduled. No learning from either side. I just hate to see these types of things. However, there are things Holmes could have done and probably should have done to slow it down, but you cannot tell kids to not play and do crazy things like shoot weak hand shots. That is really rubbing it in IMO. I see both sides of this.

 

Don't know if it happened, but I would have probably gone to the other coach and said what do you want me to do. If I am the other coach, I'd say let 'em play.

So all those games you mentioned...they were bad games right. Well none of them even reached 85 points for the entire game and they had 85 at halftime!!! I asked how many points their top 7 kids had. Because that is the true story of how long they played the first teamers and how they were playing. On a good basketball team, the top 7 are interchangeable. My guess, players 6-7 probably added another 8-10 each. That puts them over 85. I don't think people are understanding how hard it is to get 85 POINTS in a half. You have to really try hard to do that, even against a bad team. We are talking 85 in a half!!! There is a huge difference in "Letting them play" and running up the score. 85 in a half. Even the Holmes supporters aren't really condoning it! There's not a person on this earth that would convince me they did anything but push the score as high as possible without regard of their opponent. Sure, they pulled the press back after the first qtr, but we're they still trapping in the half court up 40? I bet in all those games you mentioned, those winning teams could have done the same thing and didn't. They did what most teams do in those situations and didn't try to embarrass their opponent. Again, those games didn't even reach 85! I was told how the first half was played and they did not make many (if any) adjustments until the second half. To each their own I guess. But like I said, stuff like this usually comes back to get ya over time. Heard many say they feel Holmes will run the score up on you if they get a chance. I was blowing it off as rumors, but not sure those rumors wern't true.

 

Again, nothing against the kids. The coach needs to control that. They forced 52 turnovers! Is that managing the game or continuously pressuring an obvious inferior opponent?

As far as the comparing the sports, I honestly am not overly concerned with the margin. It's how it got to that margin. And winning by 80 in football when each score is 7 points is the same as winning by 90 in basketball when scores are 2 points??? I don't think so. And btw, IF that game was a case of running it up, then I don't condone that either. But I don't know all the details of the game. It was 14 years ago!!

 

So tell me. If your AAU team was down by 85 going INTO HALF and they were still pressuring, trapping and pushing the ball up the court beacause they knew you couldn't stop them, what would be your reaction? Remember...doing this up 80 POINTS!!! C'mon. Really. You would be livid because it unsportsmanlike.

This has been debated a million times on here. It is not the first time nor will it be the last. It just happens. So 75-17 would be any different? No, it isn't. I think we understand some don't like it. The only real solution is not play these types of games where one team is way superior to the other.

Yes. 75-17 would be much different if other kids would have played much more and they weren't attacking with their defense the entire time. I already said, it's not the margin, it's what they did and how they played to get to that margin. If they had their starters out and let other kids play (as hard as they want) and play a very basic defense and limit fast breaks, then I don't care what the margin is. That was not the case in the first half at all! Go get yourself a good team and find a bad team to play. Now TRY to score 85 point in a half and tell me what you had to do to get to 85. You would have had to work your tail off, leave the starters in and pressure the team the entire time or you wouldn't get to 85! It's very hard to do against raven a very bad team. When you're up 40 after the first qtr, how in the world do you score another 40 on the second qtr?? Well you play your starting rotation and continue to pressure. Why in the world would that ever be okay to do to a team?

 

Any of you answer this. If your kid was getting beat by 80 going into half and the other team was still pressuring, running and had their starting rotation in, you wouldn't care one bit??

Glad this isn't track and field, I see blow outs every time a kid steps out on the track or field. 10 sec sprinters running against 15 sec sprinters, 60 foot discus throwers against 140 foot throwers. Kids don't see it as a blow out, they see it as "I got to participate and show my school pride, see and compete against the best of the best" regardless of how bad they got beat, they still show up at the next meet. I don't agree with running up the score but until your the athlete, in the heat of the momentum, it's the coaches responsibility to pull the reigns. Should the refs envoked a mercy rule at the half, defiantly, but they didn't and Taft didn't throw in the towel, so it is what it is, not pretty but congrats to the Bulldogs. Hope it doesn't come back to bite you, teams will be on the hunt now, that's sports, king of the hill. If you don't like it, work harder, and beat me next time.
