Holmes 105 Taft (OH) 17

Featured Replies

Taft will be better off because they went and scheduled a superior opponent to discover their weaknesses...

Depends on how thier coach uses it. Absolutely they can learn from that. They are called coaching moments. If he breaks it down to individual situations and shows them why what they did didn't work, then they will absolutely get better.

Yes. 75-17 would be much different if other kids would have played much more and they weren't attacking with their defense the entire time. I already said, it's not the margin, it's what they did and how they played to get to that margin. If they had their starters out and let other kids play (as hard as they want) and play a very basic defense and limit fast breaks, then I don't care what the margin is. That was not the case in the first half at all! Go get yourself a good team and find a bad team to play. Now TRY to score 85 point in a half and tell me what you had to do to get to 85. You would have had to work your tail off, leave the starters in and pressure the team the entire time or you wouldn't get to 85! It's very hard to do against raven a very bad team. When you're up 40 after the first qtr, how in the world do you score another 40 on the second qtr?? Well you play your starting rotation and continue to pressure. Why in the world would that ever be okay to do to a team?

Any of you answer this. If your kid was getting beat by 80 going into half and the other team was still pressuring, running and had their starting rotation in, you wouldn't care one bit??

Actually scoring 80 in football is much harder to do. As you can probably count on one hand the number of times a team has scored 80 pts in a game at all levels in probably the last 10 years. However, 90 or 100 in basketball happens many times each year ant many levels.

But the real question is this: As a coach and Brianna Adler is having a career night on her way to 20 would you honestly tell her to stop playing defense? To just stand in a zone and be a road block to anyone who would enter the lane? Now the opponent throws up a shot should she not get the rebound? And what should she do? Lazily walk it up the court and pass it around? Forgoing every chance to go in for the layup and wait to shoot the jumper?

Should the sub say Zoie Barth, that comes in for Adler play down to the competition as well? Forgoing all opportunities for her demonstrate her skills to her team her coach and her parents? If you answer yes then we shall agree that we have different coaching styles and that it is OK for each of us to have differing point of view.

On the flip side if you even have to hesitate to think about how you would ask Adler to hold back as well ask Barth to hold back as well, then it just becomes a matter of points. How much is too much? Is it 30? Is it 50?

No. When it happened to my kid I didn't care one bit. I knew his team sucked and that it was over matched and I wondered why the hell we scheduled that team in the first place. Those were my thoughts. EVERYBODY knew the outcome when we saw THAT team on the schedule.

Right on point. This game should never have been scheduled in the first place.

Hey I have a suggestion the next time this happens. By what I.have read so far this year about the Holmes coach, he likes to hold the ball out front to make good teams play man to man. How about taking a couple minutes off the clock before you start your offense. Then the score probably won't be this lopsided, and you look classy.

A very good point dribbledrive. Just a week ago Holmes was holding the ball for almost a full quarter against GRC and scored about 4 points in a quarter. Put up a total 55 in double overtime. Now they pressure a team that can't come close to competing with them and put up 85 points in a HALF! Just because you can beat a team by 90 points doesn't mean you do it. It is called sportsmanship. This one goes on the coach. He may be a very good coach, I don't know, but it is on him to make the score respectable. Outside of padding stats this game did nothing for either team.

Speaking of football, do you think Highlands couldn't have beaten Holmes this year 100 to 0. They probably could, but when Highlands got up 36 to 0, they played the 2nd and 3rd team players, called convserative offensive plays and got out. No the kids that were playing didn't take a knee at the beginning of the second half, but I don't think they were throwing 50 yard bombs every play either. You can't tell me all of a sudden Holmes had 85 points at the half before they knew it.

THAT Highlands team was coached by Legendary Dale Mueller and in an article on the game was quoted as saying"I don't think we can get any better. " The halftime score was 53-0 and Highlands went on to score 28 second half points. Some of those points came from the arm of Gino Guidugli in the second half! That game was published in the enquirer and was celebrated for Gino throwing 8 td's I was at the game and had custody of my wife's cousin James Jackson who went on to play football at Louisville and Murray State and not one time did I hear a parent from Holmes question his tactic or class. I'm really starting to think this is more a Holmes bashing more than a moral soapbox to stand on for some! The GRC strategy really put Holmes out of their flow and at worst and I don't know this to be true because I don't pester the coach... This game in the first half was to get his girls back on track and run and yes he held them back even in the first half!!! If another team struggled with ball handling and believe me that was the fundamental lacking what were the girls to do??? Coach Perkins didn't owe it to Taft to play with one hand behind his back he owed to his girls to get them back on track!! Holmes travels to Shelby County today and then Johnson Central next weekend for a Holiday tournament and then something really extraordinary!!! He is taking the girls to Florida to play in a Holiday tournament in Fort Meyers! For some of these inner city girls that some parents (not all because there are involved parents) have yet to see their daughter's play for whatever reason, where the coaching staff is the only form of transportation for some to and from practice and this will be the only opportunity for some of those girls to even see a beach in person for some it may be the only opportunity to get out of Covington they may have in life! Well I am going to say it shame on you all for bashing him when you don't know the whole story or his motives he is a good coach and a good man!! No other school in Northern Kentucky offers the same challenges Holmes does with exceptions to Newport but in my opinion that only makes success that much sweeter for some and for outsiders well we insiders see it's bitter and what's fair for some isn't fair for others!

I am not saying he isn't a good man or a good coach. I am not trying to villianize him or say he isn't good for the Holmes program. However, if Holmes was up by 70 in the first half, and one of the starters got one of the 52 steals or whatever in the game, and went for a layup and blew her knee out and was done for the year, would all the Holmes faithful be so supportive.

Also, how much better can you get playing against girls that don't have the talent to give much of a challenge. There is plenty of time in practice to work on layups. The point is just because any team can beat another team by 90 it doesn't mean they should or need to. I stand by that.

That can happen at any time even practice see Alex Poythress!! Should they not practice hard as well??

and this assumption that the game was all layups is confusing considering the girls hit 8 3' s counting for almost a quarter of the points plus I don't know how many free throws??

So you've been down 85 at half the the team still continues to pressure you and trap? I'm not talking about just getting blown out. We've all been blown out. Again, not talking about a normal blowout and mismatch here. 85 points in a half is 5.3 points per minute! You can't do that unless you are trying to. So once they were up 40 after the first qtr, it was okay to continue doing the same thing for anothe entire quarter...so much that they scored another 40??? Again, coached and been an athlete all my life. I know what blowouts are. This was uncalled for. Period!

8 threes????

Yes 8 3's!! Six in the first half by the starters and a couple in the second half by 1 jv starter and a jv reserve both freshman. It's fair to say that as inept as Taft was on offense this game or first half in question wasn't just played under Holmes basket!!

I bet the kids on both teams care WAY LESS about the score of that game than the adults seem to. I'm not for running the score up but I always get a kick at how worked up adults get when there is a lopsided score. When I was 12 or so, I played on a BB team that got beat 80 something to 20 something. The next day we are all fine.

The first half played out as any other game yes a lot of turnovers created but it was played in both half court sets, transition and shots from the field and free throws!! Taft's girls were nothing if fast as well only made the pace of the game that much faster and fed the score as well!!
