If a dunk proves to be the highest percentage shot in a certain situation, then I'm all for it.

 

When I see players showboating with break away alley-oops etc... when easily laying the the ball off the glass would've been the best choice, then that drives me nuts.

 

Leave the showboating for the playgrounds. A regulation game needs to be taken seriously.

 

I've even seen at times where a crucial basket was overlooked during crucial periods of a game all for the sake of showboating. If you're stupid enough to blow an easy basket in those situations and I'm the coach....you're immediately sitting the bench.

For me, what a nasty dunk will do for your own team's confidence, momentum, and fan support, as well as what it does to the opponent's psyche, then I'd have no problem with a player pulling off a dunk that might showboat a little but is still one that they'll be able to do say 19 of 20 times.

 

Layups can get pinned to the backboard by someone trailing the play, but with a dunk, the biggest danger is that you might get rejected by the rim, but you are probably way more likely to finish over/through someone and/or get a foul called.

 

Now, if I'm a coach and I have a kid who is experimenting with an in-game dunk like it's warm-ups and they're trying something that they may or may not make, then it's different. If it's someone who can easily make that dunk and it's one of their go-to ones, then I have no problem with them doing it in a game if they have a good opportunity to do so.

Love the dunk. Just don't need to read about it every time one happens.

Dunks in high school, overall, are pretty rare. I would say 90% if not more high school games on a given night do not have a dunk during the game. That being said...I LOVE a power post move in the lane and taking the ball up strong, take that over a dunk any day. I especially like seeing it from a kid I have taught it to. Even better.:thumb:

I know he had 12 points against Owen County. Probably had close to 15 against South Laurel. The kid is around 6'0 to 6'1.

To be clear there is no point in pre-game where it's allowed.

 

However, it can't be called if it's seen by the refs so dunk away until they come out.
