Kentucky basketball is superior to Ohio... For instance West Carter thumped Portsmouth West tonight in a scrimmage 81-55... West Carter, though a talented squad with a lot of potential, isn't ranked in any preseason ratings higher than 10th in the 16th region.

 

Portsmouth West Senators are horrible in basketball. Comparing any Kentucky team to Portsmouth West simply does Ohio basketball a huge injustice.

 

West Carter has some talented, fast players that would simply put the historically slow football players at Portsmouth West to shame.

Here's a "general rule" I've seen over the years when Kentucky teams play out-of-state teams: Usually, while the Kentucky teams might have a disadvantage in terms of raw talent, they can often make up for it with better coaching and the players having a high basketball IQ.

The thread title is "Kentucky vs. Ohio" but the discussion seems primarily to be about NKY vs. Cincinnati, plus it seems to be about specific high school match-ups as opposed to statewide talent. Now, maybe that's the whole point, in which case it's pretty hard to reach a decisive conclusion. On the other hand, if national AAU rankings are any indicator then Ohio can claim an edge.

Well, Ohio has about 3 or 4 times as many people in the state than Kentucky does. So naturally they are going to have more high rated players. I think as a whole, considering the overall level of play compared to the amount of talent to choose from, Kentucky has better basketball and is more competitive throughout the state. But that's just how I see it.

I get where you are coming from but disagree. Only five players on a court at a time. Tons of respect for the Kentucky teams and usually think they are great shooters, but tell me the last superstar from Kentucky? (That played high school in the state) obviously LeBron comes to mind from Ohio.

And Ohio has twice as many little podunk schools that would get waxed just the same. So there's that.

If schools of similar size played, I still think Ohio would fair better. Look I'm a Kentucky basketball guy but I just think there's more talent in Ohio. Walnut Hills v Holmes, I take Walnut Hills 8/10 times. Dayton Dunbar v Scott County I take Dunbar 7/10 times.

 

Not saying KY schools can't win just that the talent is better and I take that on most nights.

Ohio has good basketball at the high school level. The game isn't as celebrated as it is in KY. At it's not taught the same IMO. But there is talent there. They also have some pretty big schools in Ohio. What's Fairfields enrollment now?!?! Also the way the state of KY does school districts is so different then Ohio. Towns in Ohio like Middletown,Hamilton,Lima,etc have their flagship schools (Middletown High,Lima SR,Hamilton High,etc) with big enrollments compared to the other area schools. In KY places like Owensboro,Bowling Green,Hopkinsville,etc the county schools(Daviess Co,Greenwood,Christian Co.) have bigger enrollments then the flagship programs. Flagship programs being Owensboro SR,Bowling Green High,Hop-town High.
