Very good points, hadn't thought about this. I wonder what the finals' numbers will look like if there are no local teams playing.

Two reasons

 

1.) When Louisville was in the Big East, the conference got the bright idea to play conference games on Friday nights head to head with high school football. Because of this, U of L couldn't guarantee Papa John's would be available the first weekend in December due to the flexible scheduling of the Big East, meaning they could move a game from Saturday to Friday for the purpose of TV ratings. Now that Louisville is in the ACC, this is now moot. However,

 

2.) Bowling Green-based Russell Athletic has been a title sponsor of the state finals since they moved the to Bowling Green in 2009. Why has the football, golf, and girls basketball finals stayed in Bowling Green? Corporate sponsorship that Louisville for whatever reason doesn't offer. Russell Athletic this week agreed to stay on as the main sponsor of state football finals through 2018 in Bowling Green.

 

You want the finals back in Louisville, go find a 10-year corporate sponsor.

I would dare say if they would ever put a turf field in at Commonwealth Stadium the finals would move to Lexington.

^ This has always been my opinion as well.

I love the finals in BG. Little smaller stadium, and the event folks are very nice. Great campus as well.

If they really want local teams in the finals, they need to figure out a way to have the games in NKY...

A championship appearance from Owensboro would also help this year.
