Colonel Youth Football is the youth feeder league to Cov Cath- not a public school. The GCYL is the Greater Cincinnati Youth League for Area Catholic grade schools.

 

I don't know how bringing up private school programs proves or disproves anything about the way NKY and OH treat sports at the Elementary/Middle school in the public school system.

...and hallelujah for that. Cincinnati public schools are a train wreck.

 

Don't take my statement the wrong way. I am happy with the academics in NKY public schools. I'm just trying to point out that overall sports is not a priority in NKY elementary/middle schools. I'm not just talking about football either.

Guess I should have clarified. You don't have to attend a private/ parochial school to play for CYF. My bigger point- it all comes down to numbers. Ohio (and Cinti) has greater numbers- thus more athletes to choose from. It's not about a greater commitment to sports or to coaching.

Newsflash, not all kids at cov cath went to a private school prior to enrollment.

IMO, the difference in schools teams in enrollment. I don't think Cincy athletes are that much better than NKY athletes, they just seem to have more of them. I'm talking GCL types of schools, not necessarily the rural schools that fringe Cincy.

As far as CPS schools themselves, I am not saying that they don't have a focus on academics either. I'm saying that people who live in Southern Ohio/Cincinnati in general place more prominence on sports than we in NKY across the board. That doesn't mean we don't have good athletes, good programs, or good coaches. And it certainly doesn't mean our better teams can't compete with most. It does mean our average teams will get the snot beat out of them on a regular basis though.

Highlands is a perfect point. Yes they have a few good athletes, but their success is because of the importance people in Ft. Thomas place on football. Its because the average kid is developed to their full potential that Highlands is successful, year in and year out, not their stars. Though I might add that their stars are brightened by the level of coaching they receive as well.

Are you really that dense? You do realize that these teams had to beat the teams from other districts to make it there right?

That and their culture as a whole is much more sports oriented. Thats not to say we don't have athletes as good as their's because we do. But OH schools take sports much more serious than NKY. Primarily it starts when our public school kids are young. We place silly things like academics first and foremost at the elementary and middle school levels. Nobody seems to care about developing kids for sports before high school.

 

Very few have highlands type programs. Our middle schools have started their own programs, but in most cases teachers get preferential treatment when hiring. OH schools take the best candidate.
