Mr. Basketball ?

Featured Replies

Nobody has mentioned the behind the scene politics that will occur. Will the players coaches and administrators get on the phone or e-mail and work other coaches for the vote for their kid? This happens all the time. Will all the coaches in the region vote for the player from their region or area? If an area or region split the vote this can hurt a kid.

The other factor is one coach one vote vs. a weighted vote of naming the top three players or five players with more weight being assigned to first and then on down.

The player named as the 8th region player of the year at the state tourney is not always named as the player of the year at the annual banquet. The player of the year named at the state tourney is voted upon with every coach in the region who is a member of the Basketball Coaching association (including jv, freshman, middle school) getting one vote. The player of the year at the banquet is decided by a weighted vote with only the varsity coach naming his list of the best 12 players with more weight being assigned to 1 then down to 12. The top 15 players are then chosen.

IMO if the weighted system was used for Mr. Basketball you would get the best choice. I think Slaughter would win under this system. Otherwise I'm not so sure.

Great ideas. Your right, many coaches can group together and vote for a local player. If the race is tight coaches seem to lean towards the player out in the state vs those players from major metro areas. Also are they voting on the best senior athlete for that year, his future potential, his latest tournament success or as some have stated all around person and athlete on and off of the court? What if he is the greatest basketball player in the state but is an off court Felon? I like your weighted system process. There have been some great Mr. Basketballs but there also have been a few real duds. Hope this years turns out to be a role model.
I think that Slaughter will win it cause hell he did more damage in the tournament than anyone.

How so? What damage did he do? Didn't he lose in the same round as Walt Allen and SL? I think Slaughter did more to hurt his teams chances in the tournament, to selfish and tried to do too much. He had a nice supporting cast, that he didn't get the ball to in the end.

slaughter....i just think hes the best player in the state

This makes no difference because votes are in before tourney. I still like Dunaway from Henry Clay . He had better numbers this season and better career numbers playing against better comp. I still feel that whoever wins it we will have a good young man representing our state.

Only 3 players have a realistic shot of winning, Allen, Crutcher, and slaughter, with Slaughter probally the front runner because of his signing at the highest profile college program

Slaughter should be the frontrunner because he's the most talented player and has the biggest impact on the game of the three ... not because of where he's signed.
when is this announced?

Mr. and Miss Basketball will be announced Friday, April 14, at 10 a.m. in Frankfort at the Capital Rotunda. Gov. Fletcher will make the presentation.

Where Allen, Mack, Crutcher, Dunaway going to college?

Joshua Mack - Coastal Carolina

Allen - Presbyterian College, SC

Mack - Coastal Carolina

I don't think Dunaway or Crutcher have decided.
