Movies that are better than the book

Featured Replies

I am both a huge reader and a huge movie lover. Movies are great for a lot of things and can sometimes provide some great improvements on the source material, but for the most part the book is better for the shere fact it can tell more of the story and let us in on things movies really just can't in a reasonable manner. With that said, there are a few movies that I think surpass the books they came from, my biggest two examples being "For Love of the Game" and "The Natural." Do you all have any?

Based seeing Noah...I'd say Genesis is better than the movie!

That was the first one that came to my mind. One of the first times I had actually read the book before seeing the movie. Needless to say, was surprised at the ending (but, pleasantly so). Have not read "For Love of The Game"...did it have a different outcome too?

Ha not as drastic as "The Natural," but the movie adds on a whole lot more detail to the ending.

I read the original question wrong...my bad!

My List:

The Firm

The Green Mile was better than the Novelettes it was based on

The Godfather

Forrest Gump

The Silence of the Lambs

Jaws

The Firm ending was awful in the movie.

I forgot that...yes it was...book ending wasn't great either though

The Firm ending was awful in the movie.

The Firm was one of the first books I read after getting back into reading in my mid 20's. I had seen the movie and I was on my back from vacation from Myrtle Beach, and one of my relatives had brought the book with them. I didn't have to drive, so I read the entire book on the 12 hour trip home. And even though I had really liked the movie, the book was SO much better, and the completely different ending really threw me for a loop. I haven't watched the movie since.

I would add The Shawshank Redemption.

The fact is that the book is almost ALWAYS miles ahead of the movie. Why I spend so much time reading.

The Firm

I couldn't disagree with that sentiment any more vigorously than I do. The book "The Firm" was awesome, and the ending was 1,000x better than the movie's. I thought the movie was solid, to be sure, and very well casted, but I wouldn't put it above the book.
