I don't think 15 players per class is enough to go straight platoon. Beechwood is in that 15-20 per class range, one of the best programs in the state and they can't straight platoon. They come about as close as you can get. Very few players play all snaps on both sides of the ball. Beechwood will do what I said earlier in the thread - they will rotate players in and give the guys going two ways a series off here and there throughout the game. There are two guys who play very close to all the snaps both ways and 2-3 more who will play both ways during a game but get rested.

I like the idea of platooning if your able, but in most cases I imagine you need 20+ to make it work. You theory would work well for most schools that may be on the line of being able to go full platoon or not.

Thanks Backspin. Ashland certainly has a lot of talented upper classmen coming back next season. Hopefully the offense is opened up a little to help capitalize on what appears to be a great opportunity.

No, platooning started before that. All in, no one plays on both sides of the ball platooning started in 2009. I am not sure of the exact year but I believe Highlands and Mueller began working towards the full platooning in 2004. It seems like I have read on here or heard it said that after Highlands was beaten badly by Boyle County in 2003 that Mueller decided to work towards platooning.

 

2004 there were only a handful of guys going 1 way. I was on that team and there were plenty of players going both ways. The O and D line had limited guys going both ways. I would say out of the 22 starters, I would say 8 to 10 went both ways. 2009 was the first year. in 2004 every practice had the offensive portion and the defensive portion. I believe 2009 had only offensive or defensive practice.

Yes, with the exception of maybe Collinsworth a time or two for the 2009 team going both ways. I could be wrong but thought that he played running back and some D that year.
