I disagree. Highlands fans will confirm that they didn't think they had the "right" players to platoon either when it was started. No one has 22 great players, but players have to be developed to play one position to the best of their ability. An average athlete playing one position for half the snaps will be better in the fourth quarter then a great athlete playing every snap.

 

This reason is why area 1A and 3A teams compete with and sometimes beat Ashland, the playing field is level. If Ashland was a full platoon team you would not see the area non-platooning teams beating Ashland.

 

 

Do you even know when HHS became a strict two-platoon team? I doubt you will find many HHS fans that "confirm" your claim.

Great post and let me add Dale coached in OH and also competed and just could not beat the Bigs in Cinti until he came to Highlands.

 

He worked hard and built the Jr League football program into a 400+ strong feeder system and when he saw that the time was right he started platooning. It didn't begin any one summer day and it didnt happen all at once, it happened gradually over about 4-5 yrs and then in 2009 he knew he had the perfect team to go 100% two platoon.

 

Trust me, there were yrs after 09 that he had no business 2 platooning and left one scratching their head as to why he wouldn't let his stud play both ways but the results were always the same until his final season, the man set the bar very for teams to reach overnite and he knew this when he retired...

 

Either way, my point is this doesn't happen over night, a coach had better have a 5 yr minimum and possibly 7 yr plan in place and be willing to take his losses along the way and be willing to also be patient and not panic...

Because no one in 1A fully platoons. If Pikeville, Paintsville, Fairview and/or Hazard started fully platooning Raceland would have to platoon to compete.

And, I agreed with you each time. But, with him playing both ways you are going to diminish his number of productive touches. Think what he could do for Ashland's offense if he was carrying the ball 25 times a game and catching 10 passes per game. Same for Long, how much is the coaching staff restricting his offensive touches to keep him ready to be the lock down corner?

No, platooning started before that. All in, no one plays on both sides of the ball platooning started in 2009. I am not sure of the exact year but I believe Highlands and Mueller began working towards the full platooning in 2004. It seems like I have read on here or heard it said that after Highlands was beaten badly by Boyle County in 2003 that Mueller decided to work towards platooning.

Ashland used to be in the top of their class because they had more above average talent than they have now. We platooned a lot more when I played than they do now.

You're right, but even in 07 and 08 you still had multiple key players playing on both sides of the ball. Like you said, and I also said, HHS didn't become a strictly two-platoon team until 2009.

I can see both sides of the platooning debate. It truly does come down to your roster. As LRCW says, if there is a big drop off from the stud to his replacement, then you have to get the stud on the field. What you need to do in that situation though is work in the backup for a couple series during the game to keep the stud fresh.

 

Ideally, straight two platooning is best. It is best for the team because of practice. If you two platoon, your players spend all their practice time on one position, getting reps, getting coached at that one position. Over the course of a season, they now have twice as many reps at that position as the player who goes both ways. That makes your team much better on Friday night, and that is not factoring in the conditioning/fatigue side of it on game night at all.

What year were Ashland's number 56 and 32? Very nice players.

 

56 is Taylor Broughton, he is a junior. I'm not sure who 32 is.
