LeBron James doesn't let his sons play football

Featured Replies

I'd prefer not, but the violence level of soccer is significantly less than football.

And yes, I know the statistics about concussions and soccer.

You been to a HS soccer game lately?

Just did a quick search.

Found a college stat.

Concussions:

4.9 per 10,000 practices/games for men's soccer

6.1 per 10,000 practices/games for football

Good stuff. Thanks.

I think we dang near posted our soccer comments simultaneously.

Is your issue with football overall injuries or specifically head injuries?

More the violent nature of the game. The main purpose of football is to use violence to overcome your opponent. I'm not a fan of children being exposed and encouraged to participate in that kind of behavior.

The head injury aspect is what makes me feel soccer would best be avoided as well.

No kidding. Considering there's no equipment it's every bit as physical and just as dangerous.

I'll bet the differ on just as physical (physical yes) but just as dangerous for dang sure. As contradicting as that might sound.

I'm taking into account the lack of protection. It's every bit as physical due to the lack of equipment. Pad soccer players up and let them play the same type of game and I agree. The fact that they only have protection on their shins makes me think the number of opportunities to be seriously injured are similar.

What I would really like to see is soccer concussions for goalies as compared to football.

I use to believe in the whole "driving a car compared to football" 100%....it doesn't hold true as we get older (supposed to be better drivers).

However. If I will say this...if you don't LET your sons play football, I wouldn't LET them have the keys to a car either.

There are zero facts out there that would dispute those facts in comparison.

What about high school soccer?

I'd hope my kid didn't play soccer because it's soccer. :D

For sure.

I'm all for making football safer without taking away from the game. We make other aspects of our life safer. Homes Vehicles. Diets. Security. Etc all are improved.

I'd like to know how many happen on kick off/kick off return. Throw it out in high school. Who cares. Or only make onside legal. Most teams don't have a kicker worth a crap as is. Allowing teams to just take it on their own 25 would help a lot of teams out. Haha

Good point with the lack of equipment and dangers that presents. Good call.

My wife and I are going to try and steer our son towards baseball but not tell him he can't play football. We just hope he doesn't take interest in it.

IMO, you have to have a couple screws loose to play football beyond the middle school level.

Couldn't disagree more.

Multiple issues with your logic:

1. Do you let your young son make EVERY decision on his own?

2. You're ignoring that we have to weigh the percentages/odds on activities we partake in. I've been driving for decades and have never been injured while driving. Many others would say the same. Cars have also continued to be safer. Football cannot say that.

3. Basketball: terrible analogy. See #2.

4. Kidnapped? Come on.

The interesting angle is "if God wants you hurt...."

I do allow my kids to try and make their own decisions so they can pick what they may like and allow them to hopefully make smart decisions later in life.

Cars are dangerous now days due to other people driving, speeding, texting, dui, and too many people driving and road rage.

If God wants you to be injured for a reason then it will happen, maybe to be a witness or allow another to fulfill a goal to inspire another. We just don't know.

If your going to get hurt there are plenty of ways to do it besides football.
