LeBron James doesn't let his sons play football

LeBron is soft. So this makes sense. :lol2:

I love watching football but he's right, it can be a dangerous sport and isn't for everyone. My nephew had a TBI when he was a baby; there's no way we would let him play football with the dangers involved.

It's not just Lebron. Football is seeing declining participation in much of the country.

(I'll pause here for some to list the exception to the rule.)

Unlike some hardliners I'm not going to blame the media. The media is simply reporting facts. Lawsuits are popping up. More importantly they are also reporting on studies showing continuous stories as the medical profession learns more and more about long-term impact on the brain.

It's the biggest challenge for the sport and I'm not sure how they resolve it.

Participation is definitely declining and there is no denying that. I just wonder if the generation that is growing up now NOT playing football will still watch the NFL and college football when they get older. If not, the NFL could be in some real trouble in the next 10 - 20 years.
What's a TBI?

Traumatic Brain Injury, I believe.

What % of viewers today actually played?

You are correct.

....

LBJ and I have very few things in common, unfortunately for me, but this is one area we are in-step.

Same, my son won't be playing football most likely.

I played

My kid plays

Smart move to make all decisions for your kids. That way when they get older they will resent you for not letting they do what they wanted.

Playing basketball sure did Kevin Ware good. If God wants you hurt, then you will get hurt, if not, then you wont.

So will Lebron allow his kids to drive a car, people get killed in cars everyday.

Will he allow his kids to go outside, people get shot/kidnapped randomly everyday.

No idea. But I'd say a good chunk played football at some point in their lives.

Interesting. I bet it is less than you think.

I get the point you are trying to make, but lets keep it in perspective.

The intent of playing football is to hit each other, and that is what makes it a higher risk for injury. The intent of driving a car is to get from point A to point B. Yes, accidents happen but nobody intends to hit anybody else with their car.

My dad did not play football and I always had the choice. I played for 5 years then gave it up because I didn't love it. I think giving me the option was the best choice because I was able to learn firsthand if I liked it or not.

I'm not a parent so I can't really comment on LeBron's decision, but I assume he is trying to protect his kids.

Also, FWIW he probably won't allow his kids to drive a car because they'll always be able to afford a driver. :D
