November 13, 201411 yr Author Interesting. I bet it is less than you think. You could be right. I'm using the "my friends who watch football" test. I grew up in a very small, rural community with limited sport options for youth. I'm pretty sure it was wrestling, basketball, baseball, and football for boys. Nothing else. For that reason most people played at least a year or two.
November 13, 201411 yr My dad wouldn't let me play football when I was a kid and while I wish I would have played I don't resent my dad for not allowing me to. I have 3 boys and all of them played football at some point. My oldest quit after the 7th grade, my next son is a redshirted freshman at Cumberlands playing football and my youngest quit football after the 2nd grade. My youngest was considering playing again until my son at Cumberlands suffered a neck fracture in a game and now my youngest wants no parts of football. It's not for everyone. I'd prefer if none of them played football ever again but if they wanted to play I wouldn't stop them from playing. I totally understand why Lebron won't let his kids play football and I have no problem with that. He may want to look into soccer though. Soccer has its own health issues going on as well.
November 13, 201411 yr It's ironic that just as newer light is being shed on the dangers of the sport, the NFL is trying to create interest in England by having games being played there. Sure, it's all about money to develop fan interest and sell merchandise, but it'll likely make their youth want to start playing the game too.

I bet if you were back in Hipsterville you would find a lot higher % of fans that didn't play.
November 13, 201411 yr I played My kid plays Smart move to make all decisions for your kids. That way when they get older they will resent you for not letting they do what they wanted. Playing basketball sure did Kevin Ware good. If God wants you hurt, then you will get hurt, if not, then you wont. So will Lebron allow his kids to drive a car, people get killed in cars everyday. Will he allow his kids to go outside, people get shot/kidnapped randomly everyday. Multiple issues with your logic: 1. Do you let your young son make EVERY decision on his own? 2. You're ignoring that we have to weigh the percentages/odds on activities we partake in. I've been driving for decades and have never been injured while driving. Many others would say the same. Cars have also continued to be safer. Football cannot say that. 3. Basketball: terrible analogy. See #2. 4. Kidnapped? Come on. The interesting angle is "if God wants you hurt...."

I'm shocked that mountain ref posted something with an extreme view. Utterly shocked.
November 13, 201411 yr The Kevin Ware analogy is terrible. His injury isn't going to impact the quality of his life 20 years down the road. I wholeheartedly agree with LeBron. No chance my future kids play football. I've said it numerous times on here, and I'll say it again. IMO, you have to have a couple screws loose to play football beyond the middle school level.
November 13, 201411 yr Ole' Dabo here sums up my feelings 100%. So, I'll just save myself the time and you all can listen to him if you so choose. The best part is when he compares the factual risks between football and riding a bike (yes, I understand the biggest concern in football is the long term effects. Which, I totally understand; I wonder if those same people wonder about the long term effects of running their kids by the drive through multiple times a week and the crap they have in their pantry as it effects other vital areas of long term health). "Hey Dabo, do you think football will still exist in 25 years?"

What about high school soccer?
November 13, 201411 yr I'd love to know the comparison in concucssions/head injuries between football and soccer. Soccer seems to be the way out these days, but from some that I talk to across the state, the concussion numbers are about equal.
November 13, 201411 yr What about high school soccer? No kidding. Considering there's no equipment it's every bit as physical and just as dangerous.
November 13, 201411 yr What about high school soccer? I'd prefer not, but the violence level of soccer is significantly less than football. And yes, I know the statistics about concussions and soccer.

Soccer seems to be the way out these days, but from some that I talk to across the state, the concussion numbers are about equal. Just did a quick search. Found a college stat. Concussions: 4.9 per 10,000 practices/games for men's soccer 6.1 per 10,000 practices/games for football
