November 9, 201411 yr I guess it was easy to focus on basketball when they essentially took no college classes... 2005 UNC basketball champs: 2 semesters, 35 bogus 'paper' classes | UNC scandal | NewsObserver.com
November 9, 201411 yr Seriously, if Memphis State lost an entire season due to one players academic issues...this shouldn't bee too hard for them (NCAA) to figure out what to do. If Syracuse was barred from post season play because of lack of academic progress...this shouldn't be too hard for them (NCAA) to figure out what to do.
November 9, 201411 yr Short of some kind of smoking gun coming out as happened with the Reggie Bush scenario, I don't see the NCAA stripping a national title. Personally, I don't really care if the athletes at UNC or wherever else took sham classes. If they could get into a great academic school like UNC and didn't want to take advantage of it, then that's on them. No one really benefits when an athlete takes a class, doesn't want to be there, and is disruptive for everyone else (not saying all athletes are like that, but if you went to a huge D1 school, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about). I'm going to guess that this same type of thing happens at almost any major college. I'm just surprised that others are surprised.

You are half right about one thing "No one really benefits when an athlete takes a class" because the athletes surely didn't benefit. Colleges have accrediations and this abuse puts that in jeopardy. Time to stop lowering our standards to kids who can put a ball through a hoop.
November 9, 201411 yr NCAA does not like to take away titles, Final 4 banners in a heart beat. Being Carolina, they will get amnesty on this one, the NCAA is doing everything possible now to ignore it and hope it goes away. Most of the major media is not covering it because it is Carolina. They'll get a pass.

Pretty much every major media outlet has ran at least one story on it, with the exception of ESPN. So much for being the worldwide leader in sports.
November 9, 201411 yr ESPN which obsesses over every minute nugget of sports news is almost ridiculously quiet on this subject. If this was any school other than Northwestern (Mike), Notre Dame (other Mike) or UNC (ESPN BOSS)...Mike and Mike would be droning on and on every day on this story. Look how much attention they gave Jameis Winston's incidents...now suddenly even Jameis is getting a pass because to ride Jameis now, would show just how big of hypocrites they are by not riding Carolina. It will take a "60's Minutes type" expose' with someone acting as "Deep Throat" and spilling the total truth to get NCAA or ESPN to acknowledge anything wrong is going on at UNC.

Colleges have accrediations and this abuse puts that in jeopardy. Time to stop lowering our standards to kids who can put a ball through a hoop. As someone who went to UK and sat through classes taught by a TA with athletes who didn't want to be there and just raised hell (some TA's being younger than more than a handful of their students), I'll stand by it. Good for them if they want to go to college, get the full experience and do it right. No sweat off me if they want to take paper classes and just get by. I really don't care. Sometimes you can't make someone who doesn't want to do something do it, no matter how hard you try. No college the size of Kentucky or North Carolina is going to lose their accreditation for passing through some athletes. Maybe some people in the paper class departments fall on the sword and lose their jobs because they can't keep the details quiet and out of the media, but there's no way in the world a state's flagship school loses accreditation over something as small as a few athletes in a school of thousands getting breaks. I really don't get it: when it's the NCAA looking into Enes Kanter or Derek Rose, it's Kentucky fans talking about the NCAA's agenda and being out to get Cal or UK. When it's another top program whose doing the same thing that you know tons of other schools are doing, people want to lead them to the guillotine.
November 9, 201411 yr The point I'm trying to make: when athletes are in paper classes, there's probably a reason for it, and that reason is that it's probably the only way to keep them eligible. What incentive would any college have for purposely trying to hold a kid back by forcing them into paper classes? We're probably not talking about kids like Brandon Knight and Alex Poythress who have great grades and want to do well in school when we're talking about athletes in paper classes. No class the University of North Carolina could have provided would have given Rashad McCants the sense to just shut up and quit biting the hand that fed him. He trashed Carolina while he was there, then leaves and can't cut it in the NBA, then hacks them some more. If he'd have just had the sense to shut up, some booster would have probably given him a very nice pie job just to help him out and have a former national champion go play golf with them once a week or he could have used the networking to get into coaching. Instead, he's where he is now and having to go to the media to try and get paid.
