This Williamsburg team has played Raceland twice as far as this group of kids go once in 8th grade on a neutral field and last year at Williamsburg. Both games Williamsburg won convincingly, I'm sure it would've been closer at Raceland but I don't think the outcome would've changed and I don't see it changing this year either if Williamsburg takes their games in the east seriously. Hazard was the toughest team Williamsburg played from the east last year by far.

 

Will H be in the mix again? I have no idea being this far west but I keep wondering if they are contenders or pretenders and I suspect they are real contenders

Certainly. Williamsburg will lose if they don't come prepared to play in the 3rd and 4th round, but if they play to their potential and focus in they should be back in Bowling Green. Williamsburg and Hazard will both cruise to region finals though.

It 100% depends on the kids and coaches. In 07 LCA full of sophomores who didn't know any better made their first appearance against Beechwood and were 3 yards away from the title.

As I understand it several people contribute to the previews and they seem pretty knowledgeable about KY football. Anyway, it's good reading and makes for fun debate as there's not much to talk about the first week of playoffs when running clocks are common.

Region 1

 

Mayfield. Enough said? The Cardinals have dominated this region in the 6 class era and it doesn't look any different this year. There was some early season growing pains as they replaced a number of key players including their QB. But it looks like all is well in Mayfield after the Cardinals rolled over top undefeated 2A #2 ranked Caldwell Co. in the season finale. Mayfield features an up and coming sophomore at RB, Trajon Bright. He has made some jaw dropping runs this year. The Cardinals always play great defense and that looks true this year.

 

The bottom half of the bracket is interesting with 3 top 15 teams facing off for the "opportunity" to play Mayfield - Russellville, Holy Cross and Ky. Country Day. Russellville is the higher ranked favorite to come out of the lower bracket. They actually put a bit of a scare into Mayfield in their regular season matchup, but history says that Mayfield will win by a wider margin in the rematch and that will likely be the case again this year.

Region 2

 

The other half of the west bracket had been as lopsided as region 1 in the 6 class era with Beechwood getting to the state semi-final game every year. However, Frankfort broke that dominance last year with their first ever win over Beechwood in the regional final. Those two are the overwhelming favorites to once again face each other in the regional final. Both teams have played tough schedules. Both teams return the big majority of their key players from last year. Both teams have lost a couple top tier players to injury. Both teams posted clear season ending wins over ranked 2A rivals. This game is about who has improved the most over the past year. Beechwood's defense has been tremendous over the past 8 week winning streak. The Tigers feature a balanced offensive attack with the balance leaning to the passing game early in the year but now looking more run oriented. Frankfort has some outstanding, talented runners. Last year this game was won by the Panthers with line play and powerful running.

 

There is one common opponent with Beechwood putting a running clock on a 5A Franklin County team that was able to hang a loss on Frankfort. If anyone thinks that game is the answer to what will happen in this regional final, they need to look a little closer. The Panthers have been fighting some serious injuries but they are getting healthier every week. They should be back to full strength by the regional final. A very tough game to predict. Beechwood only has a handful of players going both ways and even those players are rotated out for a series here and there to keep them fresh. That could be the deciding factor.

 

Region 2 Championship: Beechwood 35 Frankfort 21

 

 

Region 3

 

Williamsburg stormed through the region last year, going all the way to the state championship game and a runner up finish to Mayfield. That was in spite of many questioning them entering the playoffs due to their schedule. This year the schedule has turned out even weaker than last year's despite their efforts to beef it up. Williamsburg is undefeated and it would be a major upset if they did not make it to the regional final again.

 

The other half of the bracket has been Hazard's in the 6 class era. Hazard is once again the favorite but they might face a challenge from Campbellsville. Hazard always seems to sneak through the regular season out of the spotlight. A close look at them though shows they are once again a team you better be ready for. All their wins have been lopsided and their two losses are to very highly ranked opponents. It doesn't look like Campbellsville has enough to challenge Hazard. That sets the stage for another regional final rematch. Williamsburg got Hazard 21-7 last year. Another very tough game to project.

Region 4

 

How good is Pikeville? They have put together a very impressive undefeated season. Some people have suggested they are better than Mayfield. Their win over then 3A #1 Belfry was certainly a game that could cause that speculation. But the eastern most bracket may be the most competitive in 1A with 4 top 10 teams - Pikeville, Raceland, Paintsville and Fairview. Each of those four will have no problem in round 1.

 

That sets up some tougher round 2 games with Raceland facing rival Fairview and Pikeville against Paintsville. Pikeville dominated Paintsville in the regular season and there is no reason to think that won't happen again in the playoffs. Raceland also had their way versus Fairview in the regular season and that should happen again. So despite facing ranked opponents, Raceland and Pikeville should find their way to the regional title game. Raceland may be the most underrated team in the state. They feature two excellent athletes in speedster Conner Messer and QB Josh Young. Those two seniors lead a team that has played one of the toughest schedules in all of 1A. Raceland plays great defense and is balance on offense. They may be the toughest opponent Pikeville has faced all year, including Belfry. The balance on offense could cause some problems that Pikeville has not seen. Last year Raceland surprised Pikeville in the regional championship game by a score of 14-3. There is one common opponent this year with both teams beating Paintsville and Pikeville doing it more easily. As good and underrated as Raceland is, it is a very tall order for them to get Pikeville this year.

Semi-Finals: Mayfield 28 Beechwood 24

As I stated before in this thread...and I was talking about the Pikeville prognostications....just stick with the game on front of you regarding your predictions....Pikeville....
