Beechwood 30 Newport Central Catholic 13

Featured Replies

Beechwood's hard-hitting defense gave up some yardage in the second half (they only outgained the Breds 399-310 in total yards), but its aggressiveness at the line of scrimmage was able to put pressure on Henschen on key third down plays to get off the field and hold NewCath scoreless in the second half.

Smith led the NewCath offense with 152 yards on 22 carries. Henschen finished the game 9-of-13 passing for 129 yards.

I see plenty of people singling out small position groups on here all the time. Stop whining and move on. Be an adult.

Good for you. I don't care how many people do it - I think the way it was done was wrong. If you knew me, you'd know I'm not a whiner, but you don't. So, you have the luxury of taking pot shots from your computer. Is calling 4-5 kids on a team "awful", on an on-line forum, being an adult? For the record, I don't know a soul on NCC's football team.

The dead thoroughbred has been sufficiently beaten.

As always, this was a highly contested game. These programs are always going to put a well coached, hard playing team on the field. There is always going to be talent on the field. Beechwood came out slugging then New Cath got off the mat and threw a couple haymakers of their own. Stringer had has best game ever at running back. He ran hard all night long. Jacob Smith was even more impressive. The kid has some serious moves - almost Barry Sanders like on several plays. If it weren't for the speed of Jeremy Burns, Smith would have added another TD for NCC on a long run. NCC's maligned pass defense looked pretty good to me. They had one blown coverage all night and the interception by Enslen was very well played by him. Anyone who sells New Cath short will be in for a surprise in the playoffs. Brett Slusher is just an animal on defense. That kid is so football smart. He knows where the play is going before the ball is snapped. Beechwood won the game at the line of scrimmage. It was a great game for Beechwood to sharpen up for the playoffs against top notch competition. And likewise for New Cath.

BW offensive line was really good all night. There were the occasional missed assignment and loss of yardage, but for the most part Stringer was getting 4-5 yards in every play, mixed with some 10-12 yarders and the long TD run. Knock on him was he always looks for the home run and dances a little, saw none of that last night. BW D struggled in second qtr giving the edge on a lot of misdirection and sweeps, but made adjustments in second half and shut the Breds out. Agree w/VOR, Brett Slusher is a beast at LB. I will go as far as saying if I had one pick to play that spot for me, give me Brett. He has blazing speed, hits like a truck, and seems to always be around the ball. Both teams looked gased at the end. Neither teams starters had played much more than a qtr in the last month. Jacob Smith does not get enough pub. That kid is shifty and is as good as any RB I've seen all year. Great ability to make people miss.

The Ncc secondary is fine. One problem is up front on both sides of the ball. Ncc does some good things and has improved. Smith would get a few carries on any team including Highlands. There are still problems. Discipline, stupid personal fouls giving away yardage every week, line play, tackling, and play calling. I think Ncc is a year away.

The play selection is so bad that if I was the head coach I'd fire the OC this morning and call the plays myself from this point forward.

I think someone needs a hug.

Not so much.

When you can't at least hold your own at the line of scrimmage, there is no play calling in the world that will help. I am impressed that Henschen was 9-12 passing it considering all the pressure he faced on almost every pass play. If NCC didn't have Smith at RB, Beechwood would beat them by 4 TD's or more. He made plays out of nothing all night.

Almost all the passes were just quick dumpoffs. I'd also consider using Enslen some at RB as a change of pace guy. Put him and Smith in the backfield and run the ball more to keep defenses off balance.

Very impressed with Smith. Not only the moves but the speed also! It was early in the 4th after the Beechwood FG when Burns tracked him down. That play started on the NCC 15, Burns tackled him on the BW 29. If Smith scores it would have been 30-20 with around 10 minutes left in the game. NCC seemed to do better when they went to the outside running game.

Beechwood needs to tackle better. To much reaching to make tackles.

How is the NCC kid that got hurt 4th?

Once Smith locks down ball security, he will be a top 5 back up here. He is a horse NewCath could ride far into the playoffs. They have been lucky w this strong stretch of running backs.

I completely agree.

Tigers just had one bad quarter, as Rash said they let their guard down and the D stopped wrapping. Other than the 60 yarder, Smith was pretty well contained. Other 21 carries for 90 yards, that's pretty acceptable against that kid. Sitting in my living room watching, I never felt game was in doubt
