With no knowledge of who's moved up from the Freshman team, or even if all of these players are still in the mix, I'm using last year's underclassmen roster to give a guess at who's likely to make up the majority of this year's roster.

So. - Cold Vonhandorf - Guard

Jr. - Will Heppler - Center

Jr. - Ryan Massie - Guard

Jr. - Austin Sweeney

Jr. - Kyle Beck

Jr. - Andy Flood

Jr. - Noah Lenhof

Sr. - Bo Schuh - Forward

Sr. - Grant Romes - Forward

Sr. - Cooper Theobald - Guard

Sr. - Matthew Shumate - Guard

Probable starters and 6th man.

Cole Vonhandorf

Bo Schuh

Grant Romes

Cooper Theobald

Matthew Shumate

Will Heppler

We of course can anticipate great things to come from CVH and Bo Schuh, but I expect Grant Romes and Will Heppler to make big impacts this year to fill the void of losing Mark Schult.

Romes had displayed nice key defensive qualities in the past, and along with him and Schuh, Heppler will be ever so instrumental at holding down the paint and becoming rebounding and hopefully scoring machines.

Cooper Theobald had shown brilliance in the past, and I think it's now his time to shine.

Sure he's got big shoes to fill, but I think he's a confident enough guard that will very often be given the duties of the point and will show that he's quite capable of handling them.

We've all known that Matthew Shumate is a marksman, but now we'll get to see him be called upon to prove it on a regular basis. I could be wrong, but in the past I've seen from him a stone cold approach that doesn't always lend himself to appear as a team player. To maximize his worth, he'll have to add that quality to his arsenal of assets for the betterment of the team.

I know zero about the other 5 Juniors that I listed as possible contributers.

I'm doubtful that I've painted the proper clear picture here, but hopefully I've come close to the ball park with my hunches.

I'm extremely interested in hearing what others closer to the matter know so that we all can be more informed.

I remember last year at this time not knowing exactly what to expect from the Colonels and WOW did they certainly turn that around. I think they were placed somewhere at 15-20 in the state in the early goings, and although hardly any of us was even sure that they'd get out of the crowed 9th, they thankfully made WAY more noise than almost anyone truly expected.

Romes needs to have a big year for the Colonels imo.

Has Theobold put on any size or grown any?

Scoring goes through CVH obviously.

Knowing that JV & Frosh had nice seasons last year does anyone see anyone breaking the Varsity ranks?

I wouldn't be shocked if Ziegelmeyer gets some varsity minutes as a sophomore this year.

Wasn't Flood the scoring leader on JV last year? If so, he'd probably be in the mix.

Also....how nice it must be to have a gym pretty much to yourself (basketball program). Not having to work around/with the girls teams, volleyball and cheer.

Another nice schedule put together this year (minus the Bellevue game).

Kyle Beck is not playing basketball. Zieglemeyer will get minutes, most likely as the 6th man.

Coop

CVH

Shumate

Romes

Schuh

Heppler, Flood, Ziegelmeyer, will get some minutes and contribute.

CVH, and Bo obviously will carry the load night in and night out, with CVH carrying the heavier part. Now that Bo has 70 varsity games under his belt I look for him to be more consistent. Cooper Theobald will surprise some people if he can get his confidence up. He has been going against Nick R for 2 years so he should be ready. Shumate will hit 3's and will have to improve defensively to stay on the floor. I think the rest of the guys can pick up for him.

X factor? Romes. Everyone else will be relatively consistent. If Romes can keep other big guys off the boards and get 6-8 garbage points a game, this team should be alright. He needs to be the guy to do the dirty work. Blue collar stuff - screens, boards, and alter shots (blocks or charges). Also needs to stay out of foul trouble.

I'm excited to see how these guys play without Nick R. Will be very interesting to see who runs the show. To see who is going to make sure their team is gonna play well every game. To see who is going to want it the most. Its obvious that Nick's whole game is irreplaceable - but maybe they can fill bits and pieces of what he brought to the table.

I think Heppler will be missed as well. I hope they prove me wrong but I'm not sure if Shumate or Flood can hit big time shots.

Only reason this team doesn't get to Rupp is NCC.

Good luck to the Colonels and remember: "Why not us?"

When's the last time CovCath has scheduled Bellevue and why in the world did they schedule them for the upcoming season?

I don't know if they have ever been on a CovCath schedule.

Coach Ruthsatz scheduled teams like Trinity and Moeller, so when the scheduler was making the schedule Scott said "Get me a win" just to be safe.

Wouldnt Cincy St. X be considered an easy W? LOL

...

Scott Martin is the inverse of the popular Faust narrative. He does less with more than any coach for 100 miles. :D

A shame too, a great guy, as likable a guy as you'd ever meet, but it just isn't working.

I was talking to a mom of a CCH frosh today, whose son is a darn good basketball player, IMO.

First cuts happened with more cuts on the way. And now the freshmen footballers are joining in the tryout process.

Suffice to say that Cov Cath has a lot of freshman talent this year.

Agreed - one of their feeder school programs won the NKY Public School Region last year. Heck, they could probably roll that starting five out this year and be formidable, but, you combine them with some other great talent from around NKY, they should be pretty darn good. Wondering aloud if any will go straight to the JV program. My guess is yes.
