theguru Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Serious question, how is CovCath able to win the State Championship in Basketball which is unclassified but they essentially can't even get out of their own district in a six class Football State? I am not trying to beat up on CovCath, I am asking a serious question. How can there be such a disparity? What, if anything, needs to change?

I am not trying to beat up on CovCath, I am asking a serious question. How can there be such a disparity? What, if anything, needs to change? I'm not sure there can be a good answer to that question. Two different sports with two different sets of obstacles to get to that state championship. In basketball there isn't a perennial powerhouse program that simply reloads every year that stands in their way. Basketball is also way more cyclical(is that the right word?) than football. See: Elliott County. You can get the right mixture in basketball in a shorter amount of time than in football, get hot at the right time and make a run for state. In basketball you can also lose in the playoffs in the district finals and still be in the playoffs. You lose in the playoffs in football and that's it. You're done. It would be easier to answer this question and get a suitable answer if CovCath had been dominating basketball. Until proven otherwise they simply had a special year last season with a special player leading the way.

Randy Parker Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Starts at the top IMO. Expound on this please.
PurplePride92 Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Coaching?:idunno: I'm not sure I agree but I am listening. I am an outsider but the dominance Highlands has over CovCath reminds me of the dominance BG has over Warren Central. It is mentally debillatating and I'm not sure it is something that CovCath will ever overcome. If Warren Central doesn't defeat BG this year then they likely never will again. I feel the exact same way about CovCath and Highlands. If CovCath makes it to a rematch and they don't win then I am not sure they will ever defeat Highlands again and IMO it is more mental than anything else.
MentschTrachtGottLacht Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 ... Dave Wirth may be a future Knute Rockne, and a bigger Lynn Ray fan than me you won't find, but I'll tell you this: CovCath's basketball coaching staff is special. They are a huge factor.

Random: I am so excited about this upcoming basketball season.

Speaking about hoops only, I admit I am not objective but agree 1000%, CovCath's hoops staff is special!

Highlands has a nice streak going, but to say CovCath will never beat them again is going overboard. They'll continue to produce the athletes and eventually they'll come up with a coach who can get the kids to buy in. Highlands doesn't have a limitless source of elite athletes, just a coaching staff that is excellent at fitting kids in where they can best benefit the system. CovCath will figure it out eventually.

It could be overboard but at the same time, winning 4 games in a 10 year period isn't figuring it out. Do you think CovCath will ever be able to switch places with Highlands and go on a run against Highlands is currently on against CovCath?
JJD Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I think the term "disparity" is not fair. Yes, Cov Cath has been successful in hoops recently and yes, I agree that they have a special coaching staff and the makings of a state power, but that's as far as it goes at this point. Since 2006, Cov Cath has won ONE regional title in hoops and ONE state title - both this year. Regarding football, they simply can't beat Highlands, hence the reason for not getting out of their district. This is pure conjecture, but I would venture to guess that there have been years since 2006 when Cov Cath was the second best school in the state in their class. So, I believe painting the picture of a wide disparity is unfair. Yes, regarding football, Cov Cath's contingent views success in terms of beating Highlands and winning state titles. This has not happened. But, it is unfair to classify the football program as being far behind the basketball program. That may be the case in five years, but it's not now. Coaching may be the issue, but, as much as I'm sick of seeing Highlands get pumped by the posters on this site, we have to give credit to the amazing commitment the entire Highlands community makes to the football program. Until Highlands wavors in their commitment (doubtful) or Cov Cath catches up, it's going to be tough sledding for the Cov Cath football program - but that doesn't necessarily mean that their is a wide disparity between Cov Cath hoops and football.

I am not trying to beat up on CovCath, I am asking a serious question. How can there be such a disparity? What, if anything, needs to change? For basketball, they had a special group of kids, a great coach and a lot of good fortune in the state tourney to win the championship. It was probably a once in a generation or two accomplishment as it is MUCH MORE DIFFICULT to win a state hoops championship than a state football championship. Regarding why their football team cannot get out of its district, that is easy - one word - Highlands. Whether you like HHS or not, you have to admit it is a special football program with a long time culture of the players, coaches, parents and community all buying into the importance of the program. It is certainly unusual to say the least. Without HHS, CovCath would be in the final four of the football playoffs most years and would be in the semis or finals quite often.
