Covington Catholic Football vs. Covington Catholic Basketball

I think the term "disparity" is not fair. Yes, Cov Cath has been successful in hoops recently and yes, I agree that they have a special coaching staff and the makings of a state power, but that's as far as it goes at this point. Since 2006, Cov Cath has won ONE regional title in hoops and ONE state title - both this year. Regarding football, they simply can't beat Highlands, hence the reason for not getting out of their district. This is pure conjecture, but I would venture to guess that there have been years since 2006 when Cov Cath was the second best school in the state in their class. So, I believe painting the picture of a wide disparity is unfair. Yes, regarding football, Cov Cath's contingent views success in terms of beating Highlands and winning state titles. This has not happened. But, it is unfair to classify the football program as being far behind the basketball program. That may be the case in five years, but it's not now. Coaching may be the issue, but, as much as I'm sick of seeing Highlands get pumped by the posters on this site, we have to give credit to the amazing commitment the entire Highlands community makes to the football program. Until Highlands wavors in their commitment (doubtful) or Cov Cath catches up, it's going to be tough sledding for the Cov Cath football program - but that doesn't necessarily mean that their is a wide disparity between Cov Cath hoops and football.

I think this is a really good answer.

We can debate coaching all day. It really comes down to HHS having more talent and better athletes over the last 8 years.

CCH basketball staff is strong and that certainly helps. It also helps to have a kid who isn't afraid to fail and is really talented and has the ball in his hands quite a bit. IMO it's easier to come with a team of 5 players in basketball than it is to come up with 15 to 22 in football.

I also think basketball is impacted by coaching more than football.

I may in the minority but I don't judge CCH football success against any other CCH sport's success.

Completely agree - I debated even responding to this thread because I believe it's entirely unfair to compare one athletic team at a school vs another. Yes, there is such a thing as healthy competition, but there is a very fine line. The football program has its hands full competing against the best program in KY - I said PROGRAM - top to bottom - school to community. They are dealing with an anomaly that most programs don't have to face.

It could be overboard but at the same time, winning 4 games in a 10 year period isn't figuring it out. Do you think CovCath will ever be able to switch places with Highlands and go on a run against Highlands is currently on against CovCath?

Not likely, but the series has always been tipped historically to Highlands. When CovCath has the horses and the focus they're a pretty tough customer. They'll never catch Highlands napping, that much I'm sure of.

I haven't read anything but Ru's initial post, but between this thread and the Beechwood thread it must've been a slow news day.

I don't mind the change of pace reading though Ru. Should be some fun posts to read.

Serious question, how is CovCath able to win the State Championship in Basketball which is unclassified but they essentially can't even get out of their own district in a six class Football State?

I am not trying to beat up on CovCath, I am asking a serious question. How can there be such a disparity? What, if anything, needs to change?

Just a point of order on the bolded. The basketball team did lose in the district round last year as well. Just happens that both teams advance. The football Colonels would certainly benefit from such a rule.

I don't want to weigh in much more on this one, but I will say the addition of the Ruthsatz that wore a uniform was a HUGE reason why the Colonels did what they did last year.

CCH coaching is solid, and they have plenty of talented players, but their PG made them a different team.

Dedication in the Gym could be a difference. Do the Football players put the same amount of time off the field thst the hoopsters do? I hear the hoops guys are in the Gym working on their game as early as 6@m on school days. You talk about selling the Kool Aid.

Football players who aren't playing another sport have what probably amounts to 5 total weeks of the year off from speed training, lifting conditioning and actual practice- and that's including the three week dead period. So yes, they put the same amount of time in.

Slow news day on BGP I guess.

I don't think it's a problem having a top shelf program in one area and a strong program in another. High school sports have to share the kids and the time it takes to succeed in one sport takes away from time in another.

I didn't know 1 State title in recent years translates to a pereniel powerhouse in Basketball.

I don't see much difference in CCH BBall Teams and Football teams than any other High School in the area.

To think because 1 is successful equates to the other has to be succesful is silly imo. Every school has different athletes playing different sports and some are better at some sports than others.

Lets go back to the late 80's and 90's. How come Beechwood could be so good at Football racking up state title after state title but be so bad at Basketball and Baseball during those years?

I'm no historian but Beechwood wasn't winning any state titles in the late 80's, much less "racking them up". Tigers won one in 1984. Seems midish 80's to me.

As for the last part of the bolded, what is the answer? Classification? Coaching? Other?

I can't make any connection between being successful at one sport should translate into success at another? I have been a UK fan far to long and know you can't make that connection.

I said 80's - 90's and yes mostly 90's but their first was 84. Besides that you know exactly what I mean. 1 sport does not translate to all the others at that school being successful. Now for you, they were RACKING them up in the 90's. Here is a list of all their state titles.

For all you hoops peeps, this has been in the football forum.

Along similar lines, will Highlands EVER be very competitive in hoops? And I'm talking regional title competitive?
