Pretty cool, but I thought the same thing.

Nights like last night are why people say "baseball is romantic". Certain moments, you just don't get that anywhere else IMO.

I see nothing wrong if the pitcher did do that.

 

Jeter is the epitome of what MLB should be. He's class, he's respectful, he's a grinder, he has passion and heart. He didn't take shortcuts or make a huge scene off the field, or even on it. He's so calm and collected in big moments. He's pure. Baseball will lose a little bit of it's identity without him on the field. That moment, his nephew tipping the cap, everything about it was poetic.

 

I know some pro baseball players and follow even more on twitter...and every single one was tweeting like they were still the 7 year old boy wanting to BE Jeter one day. So much admiration.

1) WOW! I think i still have goosebumps from last night. I don't like the Yankees but think highly of Jeets and that was amazing.

 

2) I know some say they don't have a problem if the pitcher grooved the pitch to him (and there is nothing to say he did) but I do have a problem with it. The reason is this: If the Orioles would've won last night they would've been 2 games back of the Angels for the best record in the AL with 3 to play. While 2 games to make up in 3 isn't the easiest thing, it's not impossible. Plus they hold a 4-2 head to head advantage with LA this year which is the tiebreaker for home field advantage. To groove a pitch and pretty much give up a game (no matter who is up to bat) is a dumb move. I know Buck wouldn't do it in a million years but he should have held up 4 fingers with first base open.

Right. In that situation, no way Meeks was trying to groove anything. But I wouldn't have blamed a pitcher if he had IF the situation were different for the opposing team (like out of playoffs already type thing).

I actually know the umpire that was behind the plate on Thursday night for the game. Adam Hamari. I spent a few days with him and we were in a wedding together two years ago this week actually. He also was behind the plate for the Lincecum no hitter a few months back. Not bad for an umpire that's yet full time.
