Dixie Heights 34 Newport Central Catholic 13

I've seen a few Ncc games. I wouldn't call the line horrible. What I see is inexperience. I also see a team that is overall slow. The speed of the game is slow and doesn't look good. Go watch a Highlands or Covcath game then watch a Newcath game. It's night and day. You can throw quick passes and run the ball and the hole stays open awhile. Good teams play fast. This team isn't fast and neither was Dixie. The guys gave effort and are doing the best they can. Ncc is young and lost a lot from last year. Be patient with this group. They'll be much better next year. I also think the coaches did a good job keeping the games I saw from being much worse. The same coach took Ncc to the finals last year. He didn't forget how to coach.

Somebody is turning over a new leaf.

I've seen NCC play several times now. They have some issues up front, and overall are not a very fast team. Having said that, I think Friday's game will determine the District Championship. I don't know much about Lloyd this year, but I feel pretty confident that NCC will fair well in district play. Their line had some injuries and thus a few players out of positon against Dixie. Most of their problems have been from playing physically superior teams. As a coach you can adjust if you have one or two bad match ups (keep a back in to block, chip withe a TE), but when 4 of the 5 O-linemen are in a physical mis-match.. Not much you can do.

My guess is against their District opponents, they will not be physically outmatched acrossed the board. They may have a bad match up against a strong player, but not across the line. My prediction for Friday, without ever having seen Lloyd is a NCC double digit victory like 24 -14. In Coach Wagner I have faith!

This game is one of the spotlight games in N. Ky. this week. If you haven't seen game film on both or seen both teams in person, there is no way to predict what is going to happen. I lean towards Newport Catholic because of history and playing a tougher schedule.

This is what I saw in the NCC Dixie game. A team in Dixie that, yes, was much bigger, stronger and more physical than what NCC has to play with. And to be honest, that's exactly what you should see 99.5% of the time when a 2A team lines up against a 6A team, so to me that shouldn't come as a surprise.

To me though as a completely unbiased observer, what I thought was disconcerting watching NCC was the rather vanilla play calling coming in from the sidelines...the lack of anything "quick hitting" in the passing game, and the lack of underneath check down receivers when sending guys deep. It seemed to me almost all the passing plays they ran took a lot of time to develop...time the line really couldn't offer. And I saw almost nothing being run underneath for the qb to quickly hit or check down to as the line collapsed or when the deep stuff wasn't there.

And what's the deal with the qb running to the sideline every time to get the play from the oc? That had a few of us in the stands scratching our heads.

The QB had done that for years. I hate it, it causes the QB undue time and energy. I think they need to either send the play in with the subs that are going in our call the play from the sidelines and let the guys use the arm bands. I've not seen any other team do that with their QB. Not sure why Newcath does that.

I think it can be traced to Georgetown College. Eddie Eviston put that in when he was the HC/OC. Coach Brossart at Dixie did it when he was the HC at CovCath, and I believe Coach Lickert did it when he was at Holmes. The common thread is that all are Georgetown Grads.

I don't think Coach Brossart does it anymore, nor do I believe does Coach Lickert. Perhaps it's time for NewCath to move on as well.

Beechwood does it that way. Been doing that way for a long time. I remember Pat Muth going back and forth. Possibly Jeff Wera also. So that's back to early 2000s.

Wow, didn't realize Beechwood did that too. It just seems to me that would make the QB do more work. Idk, I guess if it works, don't fix it.

Just to break it down.

A football field is 53.3 yards wide. Going with an average of 60plays on offence (low) and ball in the middle of field, the Qb would jog or walk 53 yards back and forth.

60 plays x 53 yards= 3180 yards= 1.8 miles just to call a play.

Above and beyond any other efforts put forth in the game! OLD SCHOOL!

Old school....yes. Is it a control thing?....yes. Do things get lost in translation from the sideline to the huddle?....yes. Would wrist bands work?.....yes.

The field is 53 yards wide but you don't go side to side. The QB usually doesn't even go all the way over to the coach. Need to cut your calculated distance in at least half.

Other players run on/off the field depending on the package. They are usually sprinting. The QBs are usually jogging.

Not saying one way or other is better. I have seen teams practice the same way so I assume that helps with their conditioning.

It is traced to 2001 when Jeff Smith was QB. It could have come from Coach Schneider watching a Georgetown game, but they have been doing it at least that long.

Not sure if it is a communication thing, or if it is just a habit thing. We'd have to ask the QBs if they feel like it affects them.
