September 19, 201412 yr Dang! U2 AND Coldplay? You're my brother from another mother (and father)! Love both.... The final minutes of the song Politik on Colplay's 2003 Live album give me chills every time I listen to it. I recently bought an electric piano for my music room and the first song I "played along with" after I set it up was Politik. I like U2, mostly their older stuff. "One" & "Where The Streets Have No Name" are my two favorites. With Coldplay, I really like about 15 of their songs. I enjoy a rock or semi-rock song that prominently features a piano and/or an orchestra. I've downloaded the instrumental version of some of their songs. "Clocks" is one of my favorite songs of all-time & I don't need Martin's voice to enjoy it. I will say that if U2 stopped making music, I wouldn't be at all heartbroken. And the same would even be true with Coldplay or any other artist(s). Most of the stuff I listen to is Classic Rock or the Alternative music from the 90's that was so popular when I was in high school.

Most of the stuff I listen to is Classic Rock or the Alternative music from the 90's that was so popular when I was in high school. I am almost 50 years old and my classic rock would be the 70s and 80s I suppose. So many of my friends seem to believe that there is no good music that has been made after that "classic" period. From them you'll get Journey, Skynyrd, Styx, REO Speedwagon, etc. Everything after that period is "unworthy" to so many of them. I'll admit I've always been on the outside looking in when it comes to music. In the 70's, instead of listening to Skynyrd (which I despise), REO, Boston (yuck), Kansas (ugh), I was listening to Blondie, Cheap Trick, The Ramones, and others in the alternative/punk/newwave genres. I also loved Ozzy I must say. In the 80's when "hair metal" was king, I was listening to Petty, Neil Young, Blondie (still), and other music outside the hair metal genre. The 90's came along and laid waste to hair metal (thank God), and saw the rise of Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam. I am a huge fan of all three and think Eddie Vedder is a brilliant songwriter. To make a long story short, I have always embraced new music decade after decade. That doesn't mean I like everything. I don't as previously noted. However, while so many people remain "stuck" in a particular era, I am constantly looking for new music to check out. My Pandora lineup is a sight to behold!! Some examples of what's in it: Band of Horses, Petty, Marilyn Manson, Coldplay, Classical Favorites, Of Monsters and Men, Cheap Trick, Ozzy, 90's alternative, Avett Brothers, Mumford & Sons, U2, Snow Patrol, Pat Benatar, Social Distortion, Neil Young, and on and on.... I don't envision a day ever when I will wake up and think I'm too old for "that kind of music". Keep on Rockin' in the Free World................:thumb:
September 19, 201412 yr I've never gotten why Americans want celebrities to be only entertainers and not share their beliefs or causes. Makes no sense to me whatsoever. They're people like any of us, and we're all welcome to share what we believe and do what we can to further causes we believe in. Just doesn't make any sense. Surely you know me better than that. I don't begrudge Bono or anyone else for standing up for whatever their cause is. The problem with Bono — like the article noted — is that he doesn't really stand up for anything anymore beyond platitudes these days, and difference in passion that he imbues in his current songs compared to the '80s stuff is easily noticeable. Bono's less about the cause than he is about the fame. So much so, that I don't find U2 worthwhile anymore. It just seems like a fake, hollow shell of a once-great band. The current version of the Rolling Stones and … dare I say it … the freakin' Eagles … are more respectable, because they don't try to shroud a cash grab in a crapstorm of "can't we all just get along?" feel-good-ism. I might be more interested if the band I once knew as a great protest band actually stood up for something besides cash and fame posturing.
September 19, 201412 yr U2 has always been something of a enigma to me on a personal level. I never understood all the fuss when they were widely acclaimed to be the savior's of rock music. Can't stand some of their stuff. But, then some of their stuff I could listen to every day. I love "In the Name of Love", "Where the Streets Have no Name", "New Year's Day", and virtually anything on Rattle & Hum. After that, I'm lukewarm, but I don't hate them. I'd see them live.

I'm heavy on the Springsteen, but I have Coldplay, Petty, Blondie, John Mayer, Dave Matthews, Ozzy, VanHalen (no Van Hagar), U2, REM, Four Tops, Cream, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Ramones, Romantics, Katy Perry, Sam Smith, Mellencamp, Bob Marley.... So, I'm all over the board, and I love keeping the Walkman on shuffle so I never know what is coming up next.

Your Van Halen (no Van Hagar) comment reminds me of a line from the movie, Joe Dirt: "I don't listen to that crap! I'm a rocker, dude through and through. Here's my favorite bands: AC/DC, Van Halen, not Van Hagar, Skynyrd, Def Lep."
September 19, 201412 yr I don't understand all of the hoopla over U2. I don't hate them, but I don't particularly care for them, either.
September 19, 201412 yr I used to be into U2, especially in my early teen's. Kind of drifted away from them, but got back into them with the release of Rattle and Hum. By the mid 90's though they had drifted into my cannot stand list. And over the last 7 or 8 years, I've grown to like them less and less. Bono just seems to be really full of himself, and the "Edge".....well, who would call themselves the "Edge"??
September 19, 201412 yr and the "Edge".....well, who would call themselves the "Edge"?? I'd say flea and slash would love that name!!

Without the "Edge Lick," there's little to distinguish U2 from many of their less-successful contemporaries.
