U.S. health premiums creep up, but out-of-pocket costs jump: study: Thomson Reuters - MSN Money

While insurers and employers kept premiums in check over the past few years, deductibles are up 47 percent since 2009. The average deductible now stands at $1,217 - at least $1,000 for 41 percent of workers and $2,000 or more for 18 percent.

We have a $2,500 each person......

I think our max out-of-pocket is $15,000.

Under the requirements of the ACA, out of pocket and deductibles were required to integrate medical and pharmaceutical. That really mitigates the effect of the increase. In fact, for most of our employees, costs went down with our last renewal. An individual with an illness that had very high medical costs and very low drug usage, or the reverse would see the full effect of the change in out of pocket.

I don't think anyone is really surprised at these staggering increases to the individual.

Due to the timing of my wife's surgery, and then her stay for a week post-op to battle an infection, we reached our maximum last year and this year, for an individual. Crazily, there is a 2500 prescription deductible on top of that. So, we have a $1500/individual 3,000 max family deductible, THEN we have the co-insurance of 20%/80% up to $3500/person, then we have the prescription. We, for now thank God, are ok financially, but how does the middle class afford this? It is outrageous.

Don't start me on all of this. In simple terms Obamacare feels like nothing but a pass through cost to those of us that already had insurance. I got crushed this year in new fees/deductibles.

And don't start me. The simple truth is that costs are going up more slowly than they have in a generation. I have the experience of my company which had its best renewal in memory and a board that I sit on where the renewal was also very favorable. The ACA is working. A half million people in this state have insurance that didn't have it before. Insurance renewals are coming in far below the rate increases we had experienced for a generation or more. I went back and checked. Every single one of my employees experienced a net REDUCTION in their share of insurance costs this year. I increased the company's share of family coverage by $100.00 per month. That was enough to more than cover the very modest rate increase.

I am glad to hear things working out on your end. Also, I am glad everyone has the ability to get low cost health insurance. Maybe I had a bad year with fees. I am venting. I don't wish anyone any ill will.

Maybe this should go in the Rant Thread but It seems as if it should go here.

Recently had to go to hospital to have a test ran. When registering the hospital figured my past and offered a discount if I paid at that time.

My insurance is 80% Insurance Coverage and 20% me paying, up to a max out of pocket.

Estimated bill was approx. $2000

My estimated part was $400 (was offered discount to pay then)

Insurance estimated part was $1600

I ended up paying $390 after discount as some other charges were added later

My insurance after "Contract Adjustments" paid $405

Why are the contract adjustments done AFTER the patient portion is figured? The Hospital received about $800 with nearly 50% from me not the 20% my insurance calls for.

Count yourself very lucky as yours is nowhere near the experience of many others. I have multiple clients experiencing cost increases unlike they've seen in many many years. The premiums are creeping but the Out of Pockets are skyrocketing.

The cost went down corporately, correct? Just to be clear.

Participation went up because people thought they had no choice. Spoon fed information that it was a mandate. Color it how you wish. The truth is that the overwhelming majority of the population has enjoyed an increase out of pocket. Do you really want all of those links?

The only person I'm experienced with is me. My co-pays are up, my deductible is up. My premiums are up. I had a plan and payments I was happy with now I don't. Thanks Obama.
