He was real somber discussing the Ray Rice situation then got real loud and excited on an interception. It was both hilarious and pathetic.

I like Trent Dilfer, but I was surprised when he said that Palmer hasn't been surrounded by very good personnel. He had one of the best WR duos in the league in Cincy, with Chad & TJ.

 

He did early in his career however 2007 was the last year he played with a good supporting cast until last year. 2008 he didnt play, 2009 they made the playoffs withone receiver who skill set drop alot, 2010 TO and chad so couldnt count on them tobe I right spots, oakland is well oakland lol and mcfadden never played because was injured. So it had been a long time since he has had that solid supporting cast around him like when he first started.

I've heard Dilfer on Sirius/XM and his breakdown of the games has always been top notch. You can tell why he lasted as long as he did in the league when you hear him break down strategy and the like. He was always one of my favorite guys to listen to.

 

I don't really get all the hate from Berman, at least to the level it's at.

Me either I like the guy as a studio guy. Now last night as the play by play announcer he didn't do so well. But I enjoy listening to him and Tom Jackson in the studio.

Bergman is a living caricature of an announcer and host, that has a one trick, giving out nick names and that is old. When you listen to Berman now he sounds really old and his words are slurred somewhat, like how old people sound when they talk.

I may be wrong but I somehow have the impression that Berman is a real horse's butt. Does anyone know someone that has met him or read anything about him being difficult? Dave Baker is another guy that gives me that impression but again I may be wrong. They may both be super nice for all I know. Just a sense I get.

A good play by play guy sets up the color man to show off his expertise and that didn't happen much with Berman. When he did ask questions, it was about off the field stuff.

 

ESPN is in a tough spot with Berman. He rarely does baseball games but insists on being part of the home run derby coverage -- which is more annoying than listening to Rosie Perez recite country music lyrics.

 

He's the face of the NFL Countdown show but they are losing viewers to the NFL Network because of their "Let's not be like ESPN" approach. It's too much like a barber shop at times and instead of reeling them in like James Brown does at FOX with Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long, Berman tries to yell over them and it causes a pile-up on the freeway.

 

So when Berman says I want to do an NFL game, what do you, as ESPN, say?

 

I think this speaks to the fundamental shift ESPN has done with their sports programming in the past decade. It's about PR and promotion. Mike Golic and Mike Greenburg used to do PBP of this game as a way to promote their morning show. They even threw in Mike Ditka a game or two. Remember the failed Dennis Miller experience? Do I need to mention Rush Limbaugh?

 

What's wrong with giving the viewers a solid product? Brad Nessler and Trent Dilfer would have killed that broadcast. Mike Patrick would have been decent because it was a Duke basketball game.

 

It's just a matter of time before ESPN puts Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless in the booth to call a game. Or Woody Page and Mike Lupica.

 

ESPN used to have a face of the network -- Chris Berman, Bob Ley, and Tom Mees. Then it progressed to Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann. Over the past decade, despite anchors/analysts trying to become the new face like puppies trying to jump out of a box, it hasn't happened.

 

Rumor has it ESPN wanted to offer Gus Johnson a contract when he left CBS for FOX. However, some of the old heads (Berman included) balked at the idea because he would have become the face of ESPN NFL football.

 

Just think about how Gus would have called that fourth quarter last night. And that's what's wrong with ESPN.

The hate on Berman when he does live events is because he knows nothing about what he's talking about. Someone brought up earlier how he was discussing what went on in a play when what he is talking about never happened. He did that more than a few times last night just in the short time I watched.

The biggest problem with ESPN is they don't know who to put in the lead of their broadcasts. Their NFL game day show should

Have someone like Tom Jackson being the anchor, not Berman who is such a band wagon jumper.
