Am I wrong on this, but I believe a famous story about Taylor Co. was that they turned down Chuck Smith for the Head Coaching job, which spun him off into his success at Boyle. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it was Taylor that said "no" to him.

Coaches, like Roy Kidd, Dudley Hilton, Chuck Smith are a dying breed, because of their demand of a strong work ethic. Most of these coaches have been successful because they placed this desire into their teams. It amazes me when people question Why? Most coaches just want to coach and help others be successful. The new breed is about their climb up the latter, not about their players. And I would say loyalty to a certain school or program has gotten many coaches fired today, because they thought the work they were doing was important. You win you get a better job, you lose you get fired.

Interesting rumor going around in TC. Coach Hilton is going to coach TC for the rest of the year and head straight to Marion County as soon as the year is over. Of course Marion County has an interm coach right now, due to sickness of former coach. Like I said, its a rumor running around.

My son played for Coach Hilton for his first year at UPike. He was hurt in spring season that ended his football career.

Nah, that old breed has never had coaches leave for other jobs, resign from coaching and/or come back due to worrying about their climb up the ladder, have they?

 

You're right. Loyalty to schools has gotten many coaches fired. Coach Graves for example, because had he been looking out for himself, he'd had left after the 2012 season..which was his best, when Taylor County went 6-4 after a 4-6 2011 season.

 

....instead, he stuck around. No, scratch that. He took a job in a 4A district where he didn't have a chance and KNEW that. So, I'm sure he thought that if he could get through these first few years, that the future would be better. Sad that he didn't get a chance to see that out.

 

I don't know about you, but the fact that the man didn't resign when he found at he had Prostate Cancer tells me all I need to know about him. A MUCH BETTER MAN than me.

 

Win or lose, that alone would be enough to keep somebody as much coach. Or maybe not keep, b/c in the end, as much as people don't want to admit it...high school football is a business...but, I dang sure wouldn't have FIRED him (b/c that's what it was) halfway through the season.

Look, Eric Graves is a good guy. But, nice guys finish last. I'm glad his health is better. As far as the athletics programs at Taylor Co., everything they do is crooked. Their basketball program is under investigation, they create positions like a Forbes 500 company and no one ever questions them. Now they have Dudley.. When the walls come down, their program will be set back 20 years.. But, it's all good. Like my Daddy always told me, "You lay down with dogs, you get fleas"... It is what it is.... Good Luck...

Sketchy situation this is. Sad, too. Because Dudley Hilton is/has and will never be anything but a class act and great football coach; and, he has no reason not to believe that Graves resigned due to health issues.

 

Two things I hope ultimately come from this:

 

1) Eric Graves gets to see what kind of great life there is outside of football (something he has done for over 30 years).

 

2) Dudley Hilton isn't made out to be a bad guy (which I don't think will happen, but just in case).

 

Dudley Hilton has no reason to believe that Graves resigned due to health reason...other than the fact that just a month ago, Hilton himself resigned due to health reasons. It's obvious that was a scapegoat. Hilton is a winner at the high school level. With that said, there's nothing classy about the guy with the way he left the kids at UPike hanging out to dry 2 weeks before their first game. When you start something and commit, you see it through. You've got guys who committed to play for this guy for 4 years. It's a cheap move on his part.

I think there was a player from last years UPike team that had a try out, troubled past played at Tennesee for a years, name escapes me. Didin't the AD at UPike also resign not to long ago?
