Surgery on Ailing Great Dane Yields 43 1/2 socks

Poor guy! 44 socks missing! Even dryers don't eat that many in a year!

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The 3-year-old Great Dane was miserable and retching when its owners rushed him to a northwest Portland emergency animal hospital.

It was something he ate!

X-rays showed a stomach full of "a large quantity of foreign material." Nearly two hours of surgery later, Dr. Ashley Magee had the answer — the dog had consumed 43 ½ socks.

Wow!! My dane will chew on things when he's left alone for a long period of time if not crated. The max he's left out with no-one home is about 3 hours.

Our labradoodle is similar -- to both your dane and their dane. Ours will eat our daughter's socks (no one else's) if they are laying around and we aren't home.

Do you think the family even realized the socks were missing? " I swear I had two socks last week"

They probably blamed the poor ol' dryer -- everyone blames the dryer.

Our dane usually goes for shoes. We've left him out twice, and he ruined 2 pairs of shoes. He's very needy. He has an entire house to lay around all day, and he lays under my desk while I work. The handful of danes that I know are just like this. It's basically an anxiety issue. Our neighbor's tore up the edge of their carpet and hardwood when they left her uncrated for the day. I'm guessing the dane in the article was left alone when it ate these socks.

I'm curious about the missing 1/2 of a sock.

I had a cocker spaniel when I was living Ft Lauderdale with a bunch of my friends. Daisy Mae was her name and she was fond of eating our panties. One day when we had come home from work Daisy Mae wasn't her usual spunky self so we loaded her up & took her to the vet. The vet promptly pumped her stomach many of our favorite undies had been ingested & Daisy promptly threw them up. She spent the night at the vet's next morning we went to pick her up & she :poop:ed panties all over the vet's lobby.

We had this dachshund who chewed on anything metal. Snaps, zippers, and pennies. Xray once showed 7 pennies stacked up in here stomach.

But could she flip them off her elbow and catch them?

Another reason I don't own a dog.

You need a dog to play soccer with you. :)
