Scheduling two pre-season scrimmages vs. scheduling a bye week?

Featured Replies

I am curious to gather opinions on which is more beneficial, a bye week or an extra scrimmage at the beginning of the season? Seems like some of the teams I saw scrimmage are not ready for competitive play. What do you think?

I personally like the bye week.

It gives you that week off to heal those little nicks and work on things that you can not during a game week

Definitely this.

I prefer a bye week unless it's near the beginning of the season which never made sense to me.

I will be the advocate for two scrimmages approach I guess.

I definitely see the merit of having a Bye Week to heal...but it doesn't really make sense for the vast majority of the stronger teams in Kentucky. If you are playing in a killer district and are stock full of an extremely difficult non-district schedule where every single week is a battle then having that week off is a big help.

The majority of stronger teams in the State though will have two District Games and usually at least one more Non-District Game on their schedule that they should be able to cake walk in. These are just as good as a BYE but now you have the luxury of adding a controlled scrimmage where you can essentially handpick your opponent and their philosophy in a game that the Final Score doesn't matter.

It all comes down to preference and how you want to build your program.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Week 0 games going away soon?

Seems like a bye week would benefit the smaller schools more than an additional scrimmage. Schools that platoon may be better off with the scrimmage to work on their 2 deep.

I hate that the KHSAA made the change and forced teams to choose. Why not keep both.

Exactly.

Remember when everyone in the state had an open week the week prior to the playoffs? I found that more beneficial, to heal and prepare for a team that you probably never saw before. I say play two scrimmages to prepare, play 10 games, take a week off, and start the playoffs.

Exactly.

Leave it to Ram to be solutions oriented. Where do I sign up?

Put me in the "bye week late in the season" camp.

Wouldn't that push the championship games into the second week of December? This might make some basketball coaches unhappy!

I care about other sports nada. When basketball got the month of June and started playing games 11 months a year I stopped caring if football interferes with basketball.

Football is the only sport that is limited for players.

Ever met a happy basketball coach?

The heck with basketball then! Lets start the season later so we avoid the heat issues , have two scrimmages for everyone and a bye before the playoffs start! Football for Christmas anyone????
