Even though Herb Washington didn't make his mark as a Major League star, he was already making his mark before and after the Majors, checkout this stuff.......

 

Before baseball he set world indoor records in the 50 (5.0) and 60 (5.8) yard dash, was a NCAA champion, a 4-time All-American and a seven-time Big Ten titlist at Michigan St. before barely missing the '72 Olympic team. After dabbling in football, he thought he could be another Bob Hayes. But after he was drafted by Baltimore Colts and wooed by Toronto, he got a surprise call from Chicago, where Oakland A's maverick owner Charles O. Finley did business.

 

Washington states, "I was doing sports at Channel 6 in Lansing, and when I got the message, I thought it was a joke. Then, I got paged. He said, `Herbie, I want you to play baseball and be a pinch-runner.' I said, `Mr. Finley, I'm going to need a no-cut contract. I know sometimes you just get rid of people. He said, `A no-cut contract? The only players who have those are Vida Blue, Catfish Hunter and Reggie Jackson! Are you telling me you're in the same league as those guys?' I said, `No, but none of those guys can outrun me.'"

 

When Washington called Finley's bluff and began to leave, he was summoned back and offered a one-year, no-cut contract worth $45,000, plus a $20,000 signing bonus. With a $35,000 World Series share, Washington became the only player in baseball history to make $100,000 without swinging a bat or throwing a pitch. The tricky part was a bizarre clause that he had to grow a mustache by Opening Day. As hard as he tried, the baby-faced Washington could barely sport a stubble. So he colored the holes with an eyebrow pencil and passed the test for another $2,500.

 

Following his 13-month stint as the only "designated runner" in MLB history, Washington joined the professional track and field circuit and remained in competition until 1976.

 

In 1980, he moved from the Detroit area to Rochester, New York, where he opened an inner-city McDonald's restaurant. He added his second local McDonald's franchise seven months later, and in 1986 he opened a McDonald's in suburban Pittsford, New York. He acquired a total of five Rochester-area McDonald's franchises and became one of the nation's most successful African-American restaurateurs.

 

Washington was co-chairman of the Small Business Committee of the United Way, and was active in the Urban League of Rochester. Washington was named to the New York State Athletic Commission in 1990. In 1992, he became the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Buffalo, New York, branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and later was named Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

 

In 1998, Washington purchased most of the Youngstown, Ohio, area McDonald's franchises from Sam Covelli, once the largest McDonald's franchise owner in the United States. Washington's company, H.L.W. Fast Track Inc, now owns and operates 27 McDonalds.

 

In 2005, he founded the Youngstown Steelhounds minor league hockey franchise, becoming one of the first African-American owners of a professional hockey league team. And few people know, he has a minority interest in the Cincinnati Reds.

Everybody is wrong, Big Mac was the 2nd. Mac accomplished this feat in 1997, 81 RBI with Oakland & 42 RBI with St. Louis.
