Truth? Or, Unhappy Coach?

Ruckman steps down as Eastern football coach

Frustrated by what he said was a "lack of control" over his program, Stephen Ruckman has announced his resignation as the football coach at Eastern High School.

"I just felt like I was being judged on too many things I couldn't control," he said. "There's just not much control given to head coaches. … If you're going to be judged, you have to be able to control your staff and your budget and your game schedules. You have to be able to run the show. If you're not able to run the show, it can be a disaster."

I have a real issue with any coach of a fall sport quiting at this point.

Truth. But I agree with Oldbird, what does that say about him that quits now? What he said isn't new information, if didn't like it then quit right after the season.

But I imagine he quit now to make his point.

There could be 2 reasons that may be not as bad. He could be hoping the late date forces them to hire someone from the current staff. Or something was told to him this week that was just the last straw and he couldn't take it anymore.

So if you were told you had to go into next week with only 2 assistant coaches because your district wont hire any for you or allow you to bring in guys you want as the head coach of the team, you would be ok with that?

Perhaps some "Lee Teegarden" type issues happening? Just guessing as to a possible reason why a coach would leave now.

I know large school teams that have survived with the head coach and only 3 assistants. Sometimes you just have to make do until things can improve. They've had more coaches than that the last two seasons haven't they? What happened to them? Why did they leave?

JCPS only pay a stipend to 1 head and 2 assistant coaches?

Let me say I could see a coach quitting at this time. Head coach needs assistants has qualified teacher/coach interview and administration doesn't hire the coaches. The high school football coaching situation is in a really bad place. Tough battles trying to get coaches/ teachers hired. Head coaches are getting tired of dealing with the issues. This issue isn't just at Po Dunk U either there are some high level schools struggling to fill assistant coaching positions. There just isn't any young kids coming out of school wanting to get into the coaching profession.

Very we'll said. That is why you see so many jobs open every year in every sport.

Maybe in hopes that things would change.
