June 25, 201412 yr Yeah … From everything I've gathered, Shane has that same disease (although possibly more extreme) that afflicts a great deal of Kentuckians. Can't stand to be away from home. Same reasons the dorm parking lots at colleges across Kentucky are ghost towns on weekends. I think that disease tends to disproportionately impact Eastern Kentucky kids.
June 25, 201412 yr He isn't from Paintsville.. Van Lear? Pigeon Roost? Enlighten us, where in Johnson County is he from?
June 25, 201412 yr I heard when he played in the KOB this year he really didn't like basketball. Several people said he would never play there. I think he's a good player but never really seen him play hard. Looked like he was just going through the motions including the state tournament.
June 25, 201412 yr I think that disease tends to disproportionately impact Eastern Kentucky kids. Grew up in EKY and sad but true. Honestly, I wondered about Hall when it always seemed like there was some reason he'd be missing the AAU circuit each summer. If he doesn't like playing, he doesn't like playing, and that's his decision. I hope he's happy wherever he goes to school and enjoys himself while he's getting his degree, basketball or not.
June 25, 201412 yr Van Lear? Pigeon Roost? Enlighten us, where in Johnson County is he from? Floyd Co he should have played at South Floyd...I knew he would never make it at Marshall..His choice finally...JC had to beg him to play in the summer..

If he's not into hoops, I got no beef with that. I am curious: What is his true passion? He wouldn't be the first kid too busy hunting and fishing to show up to practice.

June 26, 201412 yr Same reasons the dorm parking lots at colleges across Kentucky are ghost towns on weekends. You remember those days at WKU very well, huh? The only kids at Western on weekends when I was there were from Nashville, Louisville, Lexington, Evansville, or Northern KY. All of the rest headed home to work, stake tobacco, hunt, fish, or whatever else they had a hankering for.

All of the rest headed home to work, stake tobacco, hunt, fish, or whatever else they had a hankering for. Boyfriends/Girlfriends still back at home in HS was also a popular reason, from what I can recall. Some people — well, a lot of people in Ky — just can't cut the cord.
June 28, 201412 yr EKU's eastern Kentucky enrollment, when I was there in the early 1970's, had left campus and were heading to the hills by Friday afternoon, sometimes Thursday. Most didn't return until Monday morning. I know, I was one of them.

Most didn't return until Monday morning. I know, I was one of them. I shared an apartment in Northern Ky. while I was doing construction work with two buddies of mine from Lewis County that were attending NKU and they left as soon as the could on Thursday and returned on Sunday night. Sweet deal for me. Agree that kids in Eastern Ky. and small schools in general have trouble at big colleges for an extended period of time, if the homesickness doesn't get them, partying and grades will. That's why I admire that much more any kid(athletic or not) that leaves home even for a Division 1, 2 or even 3 school and stays the course, graduates and gets a good education and job and doesn't come back home to work in the local factory, etc.

The "enrollment" of Under 21's who come down to Richmond from Lexington/UK for a Thursday night probably fills the campus back up too though.
June 28, 201412 yr The "enrollment" of Under 21's who come down to Richmond from Lexington/UK for a Thursday night probably fills the campus back up too though. Is Richmond still the place to be like it was in the 80's-90's?
June 29, 201412 yr Is Richmond still the place to be like it was in the 80's-90's? Eh, I was from EKY, so we had people we knew down there from high school anyway and would go on Thursdays and spend the night (early 2000's). Younger brother was a Colonel later (his Fr. year was my Jr. year), so I'd go down and see him some too. I don't think it's quite like it was like it was in the 80's-90's, but it's still fun. Most of the appeal with it was that there was more people living off campus (as compared to dorms at UK) and there were places that were just 18 & over (instead of 21 & up at UK). I don't know how fun it would have been if I didn't already know people there, but it was always fun just to go catch up with friends and usually enjoyed my trips down there.
