Best Barbecue joints in the state?

Featured Replies

There used to be a little hole in the wall place in Murray within view of the Murray st football field. Is that place still there?

I can't think of what you would be referring to unless it was Martha's home cooking. if so, one of my all time favorites, I lived in that place when in school there and will visit it every time I get. It's not too far from the stadium but it's not right next to it. Best homemade pies anywhere.

My daughter in law convinced me that Eli's was awesome and I should take them there on Saturday. So we're going Saturday. I assume the waits can be long on Saturday due to its popularity.

We went last Saturday around 1:30 and the wait wasn't very long.

In all seriousness, the best place I've had barbecue in Kentucky is at Jim Schue's pad. And, he can do it all; ribs, brisket, pork shoulder, etc. Do yourself a favor and invite yourself to his place sometime. You won't be disappointed. For barbecue in a restaurant, Old Hickory in Owensboro is my favorite. Moonlite BBQ used to be my favorite until a friend recommended that I try Old Hickory. Fabulous!! Plus, Old Hickory gives you the option to order off the pit.

Some time ago (about 30 years) a local radio station in Louisville had a talk show on and they were talking BBQ. The quest were two old men that had written a book about BBQ. They had traveled all over the US and ate at the so called "best places". In there book they tell stories about the people, BBQ and flies around the dumpster out back . . . They actually ranked the BBQ in numerical order top 50 BBQ joints in USA. Several callers commented that Moonlite in O'boro was really good, the authors commented favorably and said that Moonlite was in top 15 or so. . . This really sparked my interest because I was in college at the time in O'boro and I had eaten at Moonlite and Old Hickory Pit. IMHO Old Hickory Pit (Now on its 5th generation of Family Operators) was hands down way, way better than Moonlite!!! So, I called in the radio station and asked them about Old Hickory Pit in O'boro, they responded with a very favorable gester and said Old Hickory Pit was in the top 5 USA !!!!! I used to eat there at least once a week and twice a day when my family would come visit!!!!!

To clarify — I am not skilled with a brisket just yet. That's my next one to tackle. But feel free to try some smoked chicken while I figure out the beef. Will be doing some pork loin and chicken this weekend for Bourbon Fest.

Damn it Jim, just "like" my comment like a normal person. I will be checking BGP later, and I expect to see a "like" or I'll be coming and hell's coming with me.:madman::p

I had to make a trip down to Owensboro for the day three weeks ago. I'd never eaten anywhere in Owensboro until then - had Old Hickory for lunch. I didn't realize Owensboro barbecue was mutton. Had the sliced mutton barbecue sandwich and a cup of burgoo. Both were fantastic.

I'm partial to the mutton personally, but the pork is very popular. I grew up in Owensboro and of course Old Hickory was my favorite. But I didn't realize how great it was until I moved away and ate BBQ in other parts of the state and the country.

My grandparents lived in Ohio County and my grandma picked up these huge mutton bar-b-q sandwiches almost every Friday night. We would get there for the weekend and dig right in. Man were they great.
