I agree, they do have the right. They also have the right to go to the courthouse and get an ID. They also have the right to be responsible for themselves and not think of America as a daycare with full and free benefits.

Nobody says they don't have the right to vote, no one is trying to stop them from voting...just asking them to be able to verify they are who they say they are. There are many ways to accomplish this that would not be an impediment to them in any way outside of them just actually making an effort to begin with.

For those that say it is wrong to ask for an ID because it is a Constitutional Right to vote...

Freedom of Speach is a constitutional right but it is regulated and there are limits as to what you can and can not say

The 15th says The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude--Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

 

Prove you are a Citizen and you can vote...it doesn't say all inhabitants may vote, or world travelers, illegal immigrants may vote...it says Citizens May Vote.

 

Let's spend what ever it takes to ensure ever citizen that doesn't have an ID, get's one and just put this whole thing to rest!

Guess the same as some illegal immigrant saying he is me and showing no ID and voting for Obama instead of the other candidate.

Would those promoting a voter ID law be content with a social security card, or a credit card, as neither have a photo? In my mom's situation, she did have a social security card.

 

I would be ok with that to start but would want them to move towards a picture ID. The first time I would have something set up to take the picture at the polling place and then mail their ID to them for future purposes.

Depending on the weapon, that ID would be used to run a background check. Your comparison is apples to ammo anyway. I'm not even against having to show an ID, I just don't want it to be cost prohibitive to low income voters from voting.

I agree with your last sentence and my guess is that just about everyone else posting in this thread does too.

One issue I see with a government issued ID requirement is the effect on voters with no permanent address. There are (and have been) a significant number of low income potential voters who have no home to cal their own, or live in homeless shelters, etc. I'm not sure of now, but used to, you couldn't use the address of a homeless or transitional shelter, for instance.

I think most people in this thread are closer together than we realize. I'm not against voter ID laws in principle and I don't think most of the people on this board are at all. As has been discussed, the timing of several of these laws in recent years has been curious and problematic.

 

As long as the law doesn't result in the ID regulation becoming a de facto poll tax, I'm good with it.
