It will allow them to possibly survive which is the most important factor I guess. But lets face it they can only avoid Beechwood in district play. And I guess they can still play Dayton and Ludlow and Pendleton Co in non district play to generate some fan interest. Beats the alternative of being in 2A and not being able to field a team.

I hate to say it, because there is not a bigger fan of KY HS Football than me. Nobody wants to see it continue to grow than me, and it has.

 

But, all of this realignment and 6 class stuff does is show just how big of a gap there is between the haves and have nots (on a yearly basis), and it probably always will be that way. Sure, you are going to have an exception to the rule every now and then (ie: Boyle County), but it is what it is in the grand scheme of things.

 

Grants AD was spot on as far as the size of the school they actually are when it comes to football. So true in most, if not all rural county schools.

Those schools out in the county didn't have football for a variety of reasons, one being that it just wasn't something that they cared about (matter of fact, I know a couple schools that when they merged together...they brought out the ENTIRE student body out during the day to watch the football team practice/scrimmage, b/c many had never watched the sport before). Problem is, nothing has changed in 50-60 years. Those parts of these county's didn't care about it then, and they don't care about it now.

Take Garrard for example, say it was still the Lancaster High School Green Devils , yet they still had to play 3A...would there be much difference? (even though they would be a 1A school).

To be fair, Camp Dick and Paint Lick both had 8-man football for about ten years before Garrard County opened. But your point is still true.

Personally, I think 8 man would be the way to go for A LOT of these 1A schools. They still play it out in the plains, and it's pretty big. Fun to watch for sure, it's all over youtube and you can even do generic 8 Man Hudl search. I think they even play on a regulation field. Talk about fast paced! Everyone I've ever watched has had 80+ points scored b/t the two, and that's at a minimum. Think about it..where do MANY (heck, even up into the higher classes) of these smaller schools struggle to have? Linemen. So, you play without both OT's and minus one skill kid. But, for some reason, I guess that would feel too much like 'throwing in the towel'.

 

I think it would be a great idea for a lot of youth leagues in some of these counties, too. Play 8 or even 6 man.

Perryville was the only school in Boyle County that played football prior to consolidation in '63. They too played 8 man football. Basketball was king of the area then.

I have records of Lancaster playing Junction City in both 1920 and 1921, but I know they weren't playing any time near the consolidation.

You're right. I didn't see that anywhere either. I wonder if that wouldn't move Oldham or South Oldham from 5A district 3 into district 5 with Highlands, Dixie, and Cov Cath.

 

South Oldham would make sense since they've been in a NKY district for the last 4 years. That would be a real meatgrinder district.

I'm not sure if it is a rule in every state. I think the idea does have some merit. I could be wrong but I think we had a small amount of schools in the last 15 years or so play 8 man here in the state. I don't think it was KHSAA but I remember seeing scores in the paper. I think it is an exciting brand of football that for small schools could be great. It can also be pretty inventive
