Mark Stoops gets extended

Featured Replies

Mark Stoops just got himself a new contract extension with the University of Kentucky. UK announced today that Stoops’ contract has been extended through the 2018 season. The new deal extends the term from Dec. 31, 2017 to June 30, 2019, giving him five years remaining on his contract.

Mitch Barnhart said, “We are excited about the enthusiasm and recruiting success that Mark and his staff have brought to our football program. We had the nation’s second-largest increase in attendance last season and we have had the two largest spring-game attendances in school history (in 2013 and 2014).”

“In recruiting, Mark and his tireless assistant coaches have made an obvious impact with their first two classes and that momentum is carrying forward for 2015.”

Yahtzee.

Mitch must have gotten excited over the recruiting because the results aren't there yet.

He's coached one season with freshman he recruited and leftover players from Joker's failed regime. Mitch sees what everyone does. The program has turned 180 and Coach Stoops is working his tail off. The results are forthcoming, but it won't happen overnight. Joker dug a huge hole and Coach Stoops is rebuilding the program the right way. One brick at a time.

This is a bit premature however that doesn't mean I'm against Stoops. Its just too soon to tell how well he is performing as the head coach. Recruiting is one thing, results are an entirely different manner.

You guys REALLY don't see a difference between Stoops & Joker??

No need to try to put words in my mouth, I'm perfectly capable. Nowhere did I mention Joker. I just think you should win some games before we start throwing money at coaches. He's done a good job recruiting. We have no idea if he can coach. His track record indicates that he can not. However, I believe he is an upgrade over Joker.

Nice gesture for UK but all coaches are year-to-year.

Stoops has shown nothing and proven nothing.....must have plenty of cash to sling around right now....maybe someone hit the superfecta at the derby!!!

Good move by Barnhardt. Here's why: if Stoops & Co. have another bad season with wins and losses he has already extended Stoops and the coaches can use that in recruiting to keep players coming in. Stoops would be contracted through 2018 so they could tell Class of 2015 recruits that. Of course, as was mentioned earlier it still means nothing. So, if things went bad again and recruiting dipped then he would not be extended again until results on the field were shown.

Of course, the timing of the announcement was very well played by the UK administration to cone out on the same day that it was reported that tuition for in-state students at UK is going to rise again.:ohbrother:

Always curious why haters troll UK threads. But never surprised. Gimme a break.

Really, a hater. You said earlier that UK had turned a 180. Seems like most on this thread are wishing to hold out with a comment like that until results on the field are shown. Are we all haters. I think it's called being realistic. To me, turning a 180 would mean UK is competing for SEC titles. Long way to go for that.

Remember, Orgeron at Ole Miss had top 10-15 recruiting classes every year but failed to produce on the field.

As I said, I actually think it was a good move by Barnhardt (and some on this thread say it is not). I just think it's a good move for different reasons than you do.

I have no problem with extending Stoops. The excitement has returned to the football program & it shows in the attendance numbers. Stoops has also done an excellent job recruiting thus far. With that said, I think it's fair to question how/why the extension was granted. Stoops hasn't had any on-the-field success, which is the measure of success. Fortunately, it's a modest extension.

What results has he shown thus far that warrants this extension? Sure he has definitely put some energy back into the fanbase and that is showing in our spring games. He has also really hit the recruiting trail and appears to be doing better than Joker in this department by a good margin. So past those things, where are the results on the field? He has had one season and he went to 2-10. Who gets a contract extension one year into a job after he goes 2-10? Nobody should.

Buying low.

If UK doesn't at least double their win total this year Barnhardt will be catching seven kinds of hell for this move.
