It's my understanding both Padgett and Martin are getting reps. They have also started getting Martin reps at WR.

They also lost Their anchor on the O-line, Dustin Baker isn't playing either which is a shame. He's played since 1st grade with my boy and really wanted to see him finish his senior year playing.

No, just didn't want to play this year.

 

The last couple years he said he didn't want to play but kept being talked into it by the coaches. This year however he so far has stuck to his guns...so far anyway.

That's not good. DB was a really good player. Sounds like he is not playing for himself. He should play this year for his team. Whatever happened to team instead of me? I think it got lost in translation. Sad.

On one hand, I understand what you are saying. But, if he doesn't love playing football, why should he have to. How many kids are pushed into sports by their parents (not saying that's the case here) and do it because their parents make them. Not many of us would stay in a crummy job we hated for the "sake of the company". Even though football (and other sports) are a team game, we all initially (and continue to) play them for the enjoyment they bring to us personally. Being part of a team is often a part of that enjoyment, but if a person just hates what they are doing, I would think most of us would tell them to stop doing it.

I agree, it's unfortunate but someone staying on the team despite being miserable is doing neither himself nor his team any good.

You're right the kid shouldn't be made to play if he truly does not want to. It is a shame. Rarely do you here guys down the road say they wish they would have quit or wouldn't have played. But you hear people say all the time how they wish they would have played. Just hope the kid does not regret it later.

I can tell you that he was never pushed into playing by his parents. Although they love watching him play and football has always been their favorite sport, they never once pushed him into playing. The last couple years when he said he didn't want to play they stood by his decision and never once forced him into playing. It was the coaching staff that persuaded him into playing.

 

The family just got back from vacation and trust me, if the parents were in anyway trying to talk him into playing they wouldn't have went in vacation during the time period that football practice was going on, they would have went during the dead period instead.

 

Also wanted to clear up the notion that DB didn't like playing, he loves football but just got burned out I believe. Growing up he always played FB and or TE, I think the move to the line wasn't something he liked as much as FB, but that is just my guess, nothing concrete. The only thing I know is concrete is he does love the game, just burned out is all. It happens.

 

One other thing that a lot of folks don't realize about DB. He looked at last year as being his senior season in a way. The seniors he played with last year was basically his class and the kids he grew up with and played with since 1st grade. He and my son were best of friends since 1st grade when they played on the same team together and did for Yeats andmfor 8 years played on the same team when they would go play in Louisville etc. in tournaments etc. DB was held back in 7th grade for a year. He could have went on without being held back but his parents thought it best to help get his grades up and it worked out for the best. So last year was basically his senior year and those kids were the ones he grew up playing with all those years. So to him, the connection he had with his teammates were those last year. He has since seen all those friends finish playing football and have moved on to college and in a way he could have also felt it was the right time to move on himself from the sport. In a way, last year was his senior season.

I didn't mean to imply he might have been pushed by his parents to do something he didn't want to do. Just using that as an example, that as a coach, I see very often. And whether your "burned out", tired of playing, or never really loved the game to begin with, if you don't want to be there, I don't see any reason why he should be there, and don't have any issue with a kid deciding it's time to move on and do something else.

Love Dustin Baker. Sorry to see him go, but he's made the decision for himself, so we need to respect it. Would have loved to see him one more year, but he has given his all in all facets, so let's pat him on the fanny and wish him all the best.

Gotta disagree here. You can do a lot of things in life for others. Playing high school football is not among them. Football, and particularly line play, is about the choice of out efforting ( I know that's not a real word) the guy(s) across from you. This is a conscious choice that you make maybe 100 or more separate times in a single game. You simply don't do that for someone else. Doing it for team, another person, etc... Simply will not work. YOU have to want to do that or there will be a let down. That letdown can, and likely will, lead to injury.
