April 10, 201412 yr Give me Hamilton and Votto on 1st and 2nd every single time no matter how many outs there are rather than Votto up with Hamilton on 2nd and 1 more out and I guarantee you I score more runs over a season. That's the math. Not that hard. With this team, sure. Votto isn't a typical 3 hole hitter. I'm not disputing a high OBP guy in the 2 hole, I'm disputing the best hitter in the 2 hole. Your 8/9 guys aren't good hitters and don't have high OBP's. You're limiting your best hitter to hit with 1 high OBP guy if he's in the 2 hole. Don't care what math says, makes no sense. Like Spindoc said, the 3 hole is a crap shoot with the Reds. Have your high OBP guy in the 2 hole. Votto is this teams best hitter, which is why run production sucks. He needs to be in the 2 hole.
April 10, 201412 yr Author Joe Mauer Mike Trout Dustin Pedroia A couple others that are arguably the best players on their team hit 2 as well...It's not common place yet, but it's starting to happen. Trout has Pujols behind him. Pedroia has Ortiz behind him. Mauer started out in 3 hole, moved to 2 hole with Willingham behind him, stayed there with Willing ham out. So, I'll give you one of the 3. I guess we will have to define "best hitter" with that argument.

Before Votto's injury he had back to back seasons of 37/113 and 29/103. That fits your definition of a typical 3 hitter. It's not his fault Baker had two guys in front of him that never got on. Last year was obviously a tad disappointing b/c Choo was on so much but Cozart and BP hit 2nd too much and Votto still got on at an outrageous clip. Votto thinks, and he has been proven correct by math, making the least amount of outs is the most important thing. It's not his fault some managers and fans don't understand that.

With Victorino out he's been hitting second but when he returns there's a good chance that Sizemore and Victorino hit 1-2 if Grady continues to hit.

You really think the guy that is going to have by far the highest batting average on the team and by far the highest OBP and probably the highest or 2nd highest slugging % on the team wouldn't drive in runs if two guys that hit in front of him got on consistently? Their major problem is he's the only player that will get on at a high clip. That plus him being their best hitter is why he should hit 2nd. Nobody else can get on and Phillips and Bruce have enough power to score him.
