“Award-winning producer” on John Calipari’s legacy

Using this line of thinking, I assume you don't think John Wooden was a great coach? Must not think good old Roy is very good either. The amount of talent those guys have/had over the course of their careers has been mind-boggling.

Got nothing to do with the talent he gets. I watch his teams on the floor and I just don't rank him as a great coach. I didn't say he wasn't good...but definitely not great. I think there are many far less heralded guys that are every bit and more the coach he is in so far as strategy, teaching O and D, game prep, in game decisions, etc. But, as I said before, these same coaches PALE in compression to Cal's recruiting/selling abilities, which, as I said above, is part of coaching ability as well, so you have to give him props for that.

I've enjoyed this season's tournament run much more that 2012 because it was totally unexpected from me.

That was more of a relief than anything because it would have been such a let down if they lost.

I'm betting lots of graying UK fans liken it to the 1978 title run.

I have a few gray here and there, and yes it was.

I certainly remember that year/team. From the day that the 1977 season ended all that those guys and Joe B. heard was "you WILL win it" "Year of the Wildats", etc.. I remember more than one of the player from that team saying (in years after) that they wished that they could have had more fun, enjoyed that Championship season/tournament run more. Seemed like they never heard someone tell them that they had a good game after a game - just "Win it All".

Not really, like someone pointed out Wooden is considered the gold standard of college coaches but he also had the best talent. Coach K hasn't won with DivII talent either, yet he is considered a great X and O coach. Bob Knight is considered one of the great X and O coaches of all time, but when he won he had future NBA players on his teams.

Shocking that you don't think he's that good of a coach...you've not been clear on that this season. But I bet you think dadgum ol'Roy is top notch! :)

Yep, 78 was a different animal. I honestly don't know if Kentucky basketball would still be relevant if Joe B didn't show you could still win at UK after Rupp.

I liken 12 to 96, something crazy would have had to have happened for either of them to lose...and the state would have went through 10 years of mourning after each of those seasons if UK had lost. :lol2:

I personally like him a far site better than Cal...and not just because he is at UNC now, felt that way about him at KU as well. Is he a great coach? Pretty darn good one. But if someone tells me he aint that good...well I'm not about to get riled up and ready to go to feuding over it cause to be quite honest, the ONLY two coaches I'm worried about how good they really are is myself and the coach I'm coaching against when my teams are playing.

^There's never been a coach that has accomplished less with more than Roy during his time at Kansas.

:lol2: Reading your post this season I'm pretty sure you think you would have had a better record this season than Cal if you were coaching UK.

I look at 78, 96 and 12 all in the same vein. I expected a National Title from each and anything less would have been disappointing.

78 and 96 were more similar in that there was a culmination of a four year period that ended "where it should." Final Four as freshmen, disappointing Elite Eight loss when you were as good as anyone in the nation as Juniors and then the Seniors led the squads to the ultimate prize.

I expected greatness from '12 because of who returned (Lamb and Jones) coupled with MKG and Davis. Once I started watching that team I felt they were the best team (almost machine like) in the nation by the halfway point.

That was more of a relief than anything because it would have been such a let down if they lost.

Same here! Just like in 96 I loved that we won the title but I honestly loved the 98 team and their run more. The way they went about it and the close games and the teams they beat to go win it. Which is same reason why I loved the Brandon Knight team because of the run they had even though they came up short. I love the 2012 team too, but as others have said because it was more of a relief that we did end up winning it. If this team can end up winning it all, it may be my favorite UK tournament run I have ever seen or enjoyed.
