Saw this tonight and wondered how it was put in the scorebook.

 

Runners on corners, one out. Batter strikes out (now 2 outs). Scoreboard operator inadvertently had 2 outs on board before and catcher thinks there's 3 outs and rolls ball back to mound. Runner on 3rd breaks for home and scores. How is this recorded in scorebook??

This was the only thing I could come up with.

 

I jokingly said "M-E" as in mental error.

No throw attempt was made, but after the catcher realized the error, he ran and got the ball. made a diving attempt at the runner sliding in, but it was too late.

The run is not necessarily unearned in this case. It all depends on what happens with the next batter. If the next batter gets a hit and that run would have scored anyway, without the aid of the E2 on the previous play, then it is earned.

I've always been taught for a SB to occur, 2 of the following 3 things must occur.

 

1. Pitcher in stretch

2. Holding him on

3. Throw by catcher

 

Now that is just what I was told years ago and I've always remembered it. Not sure if that is actually a good barometer or not.
