Mack to Wake Forest?

Featured Replies

MTGL, you could combine a couple threads here. Would their be a position on Mack's staff for Coach Ruthsatz? Mack's the one that introduce him to Colonel nation, will he be the one that takes him away? The "grassy knoll" theroist could be in full swing on that one!

No.

Mack didn't introduce him to CovCath, he simply wrote a letter of recommendation for Scott at Bob Hurley's request. Chris, at that time, had never met him. Chris had nothing to do with CovCath renting Cintas a few years ago to practice before the 9th Region tourney. They know each other and are friendly, but certainly are not friends.

The next time Chris is able to add a coach to his staff, it will either be Jeremy Growe or a veteran with deep recruiting ties, depending on which coach left to create the opening.

In five years he has two Sweet 16's and is awaiting a Top 10 class to arrive in August. He has had some horrible misses in recruiting, and there are a number of other fair criticisms of him that would be fair, but by and large, I think call his tenure average would be a bit harsh. Regardless, he certainly doesn't belong in the 9th position for head coaching salaries in the Big East.

Both Xavier and Chris would be well served to stay. In Xavier's case, you keep that class together, you have continuity, and they should be a Top 10-15 team next year. In Chris' case, you are closer to being "the guy" when a true plum job opens up by having a great team next year. If he goes to Wake he is 3-5 years from fielding a great team, if ever.

I definitely agree with the bolded.

Also, agree about X next season, assuming Semaj doesn't bolt for the league. I can't imagine them not being top 10.

Hasn't Xavier been in Forbes year after year for being a top 20 basketball program when it comes to making money? They have to be able to match Wake's offer.

Being able to and willing to are two different things though.

Hmm... dejavu

Hadn't even thought of that.

If the money were equal, does anyone think Wake Forest is a better basketball job than X?

A few years ago I would have said yes, they used to have a lot of NBA talent play in that arena. Now it's worse, and a lateral move imat best which is stretching it. Mack has already built up X. He's a Cincy guy, and the expectations in him aren't as heavy as it would be at Wake. Him going there would be a huge mistake if X offers him the same money. Money would be the only reason.

I think you could find a fair number of coaches who would say, "hey wait a minute..." to this one.

For starters, one works in Columbus, one in Tucson.

True, but you know what I mean. It's an established program that has player depth which Wake doesn't have

It's got to be a tough call for Mack. Revenues have to be down in the new BE with no football while the ACC is racking in the $'s with their contracts for FB and BB. It may come down to personal preference...take less money to stay at home in Cincy and be consistently in the top of the league or go for the $ at Wake and be looking for work 3-5 years later.

I don't follow. Down from what? Didn't the TV package go way up?

The renegotiated BB contract was much less than it had been with football included.

X was in the A10. So wouldn't we only compare the new BE revenue stream to what they had in the A10?

I think that's fair but would expect the BE $ to be somewhat higher than what the A10 scale was. In the end, if $ is his motivation he should go to Wake. However, I'm on the fence about him being upwardly mobile. Not sure he has done enough at X yet. He inherited a program on the rise that may have plateaued for the past 2 seasons.
