As I said earlier, I think Long bothered Ray. Ray did not influence the game as mush as he normally does. He is not a polished offensive player IMO but he is working on it. I think he has a very nice release on his jumper and will have decent range on it next season. For his size he is well coordinated and quick and seems to have basketball savvy. Remember, he played very little as a sophomore, so he is learning on the come. I would not be surprised if he put on 10-20 pounds before next season. (Who knows, maybe an inch ot two as well.) This will help him because sometimes this year I think he got knocked around a little. If he does improve as i hope he does, it remains to be seen how Coach Szabo utilizes him. It is my impression that he is not a "feed-the-stud" type of coach, rightfully or wrongfully. I recall Nathan Dieudonne (Mr. Basketball from 2012) averaging only in the 15-17 point range.

Man oh man....triple OT. I thought MY blood pressure was high yesterday when I was in the stands. I'd have stroked out if it had gone to triple OT. I wonder how the foul situation was in that game. Was it JV team versus JV team by the time the third round of overtime came around?

 

I was there. Starters were still in. Final was 35-33. Every possession was huge.

I hadn't seen anyone post about it previously, but have there been any other Sweet 16 championship games that ended in overtime? I was curious about that one.

He also said that the old gym at CovCath, when it was located on 6th St. in Covington, had such a low ceiling that you had to be careful when you shot the ball, or else it would hit the ceiling.

 

CovCath's first ever Varsity season was in 1936. In my Dad's 1936 Junior year yearbook there's a special page with an article written by 1936 graduate and player Gerald Muething about it being their first season.

 

Mr. Muething passed away just a couple of years ago.

 

In the history of CovCath basketball he came that close to seeing them become State Champions for the first time.

 

I can just picture folks like him and Dan Tieman sitting high on a cloud smiling brightly.

As of about a year ago Donald Schmidt was the only living member of the 22 graduates of the 1937 class. I'm not sure if he is still with us, but if he is he'd be either 94 or 95.

 

He is the Grandfather of Scott Eagles basketball sensation Lauren Tibbs that just a couple of days ago finished her Sophomore season playing for Marshall.

Since the Colonels are now first time State Champions, I wanted to bring it full circle 'round and shed light on their humble beginnings. They've certainly paid their dues over the years. This one has been a long time coming and so very much deserved.

 

"With A Spirit That Will Not Die" has been displayed by their student body from the very beginning.

 

Varsity Basketball

 

This year witnessed an important step in the history of Covington Catholic High as it marked the organization of the first C.C.H basketball team. Since the school had no football program, the call for basketball players was issued early in November. Thirty hopefuls eagerly answered the call, all anxious to gain a place on the pioneer team, which was eventually to be limited to twelve in number. Intensive practice sessions revealed who the deserving twelve should be, and by mid-December these were ready to go forth and battle for dear old C.C.H.

 

Victory crowned their first two efforts, but tougher opposition forced the Colonels to bow in defeat to their next four opponents. One of these losses was to the "Hawks" of Holy Cross High, whither a large number of students accompanied the team; and be it said to their credit, never failed to give their mates most loyal support. Winning or losing, they cheered them on. The migration to Hamilton, which again about fifty of the students made with the team, might be called the high-light of the season, for it was on this occasion that the Colonels encountered the strong Hamilton Catholic Reserves and won a close decision. This impressive victory was followed by two more defeats, but evidently the team was profiting by its experience and was definitely on the up-grade, for after having played a wild first half in the second encounter with Holy Cross, they came from behind to win while limiting the "Hawks" to two free throws in the second half. The following week they conquered their nemesis, Beechwood, and then concluded the schedule by defeating Ohio Military Institute.

 

Visions of District Tournament laurels next loomed before the ambitious Colonels, but they had the bad fortune to draw as their first opponent the tournament favorites, Lloyd High School. The experts figured this game to be a set-up for the Erlanger boys, but the plucky Colonels displayed unexpected strength, losing, however, by a 31-21 score.

 

The initial record of a C.C.H. basketball squad brought views of bigger and better things for the school, as it showed what could be done if the opportunity were granted.

I thought it was quite obvious that he does not accept coaching and scowls at any criticism. In the Trinity game where he took two ill-advised shots, Billy confronted him as he came off of the court, Long literally and definitively hollered back at him. Hicks even pointed to the end of the bench as he removed him from the game. However, within a minute and a half, Billy put him back into the game. I thought it was quite obvious that he and Billy butt heads. Not a good situation.

Someone posted about "being lucky" with their draw. As Skinner reminded me today they had to play two of the top teams in the state in back-to-back games just to GET to the Sweet 16.

They also played the late game on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

Your statement was that you never saw an instance of Long having a bad attitude. IMO Long has a bad attitude. As far as others go, it is a sad state of affairs when the players are permitted to talk back to their coach.

 

I saw a lot of instances of coaches not being in charge of their programs this week. Jump passes, Pull up J's at first opportunity, no weakside help, Fouls committed 80 feet from their opponent's basket, attempts to constantly block shots, poor clock managment, etc. etc. Goes to show that talent will overcome mediocre coaching, and if these guys have good records they are perceived as good coaches.

You didnt see that on CCH sidelines. Those kids would run through a brick wall for not just their head coach but every asst on the staff. All are well liked. The staff they have put together is very special. They work together well.

I was a fan of Mike Listermans but you never saw the respect you see today back when he coached the kids. Lots of pouting, not giving hand slaps as they came off the court, on and on.

Coach Ruthsatz has created a monster and Coach B has some big shoes to fill.

He will do fine.
