Of the 16 schools participating in last week's Sweet 16, only TWO (2) of them are private schools: Trinity & Covington Catholic. I don't recall who Trinity beat to win their region, but Covington Catholic beat Holmes...a public school.

 

Ballard. Who wins the Seventh ALL THE TIME. Private schools have won the Seventh Region exactly five times in the last half-century.

 

But stepscalled did mention that not coming from an urban area changes the dynamic for him a bit. I'd imagine it would.

One of my favorite things about Ky High School Basketball is the lack of overwhelmingly dominant programs. If the same 2 or 3 schools won the state title every year, I think that would turn me off to the sport. How about these stats:

 

In the last 11 years, 11 different schools have won a state title.

In the last 23 years, 21 different schools have won a state title.

In the last 35 years, 30 different schools have won a state title.

In the last 42 years, 35 different schools have won a state title.

 

I think those are pretty impressive numbers

This would be one of the better arguments to NOT classing basketball. While I'm somewhat in favor of having two classes, if there were, there would probably be a good chance you'd see more repeat winners.

Mason Co is a large school and will be 4A in the new football alignment. Never feel sorry for a school with a "gym" that seats 6500 people.
